The NEW SC is a classic 30s Gillette.
I see many close comfortable shaves in your future. Congrats.

Thanks, is it original, head and handle?
Does the condition look OK

I have an LC how does the SC compare, more or less aggressive?

It was an impulse purchase hence my daft questions

Well the condition is normal for this model. Many are found with the thin gold finish worn or polished away. No big deal. All the NEWs are wonderful shaves in my book. Some will say that the SC version is milder than the LC, but I have several SC examples and not all of them follow that rule.

One thing for sure, you have good impulses. Enjoy.

Many thanks, I always liked the look of the bar handle more than the ball end, can't wait to try it.

Condition looks fine. Nice to get the blade case, plus some antique blades. The common bar handle is “original equipment” for the short comb head. There are variants on the common bar. You can polish it up as much as you want, but vigorous polishing will take off any remaining gold wash.

I don’t find a big difference in the aggressiveness of the LC and SC. I suspect that Gillette felt they were giving their customers a good shaving experience and didn’t really think about providing different aggressiveness levels until the TTO days.

There is no one version of either the SC or LC. Gillette with or without rhyme or reason fitted multiple caps to both razors (The Parts Bin Period) , only one which exclusive is to the SC. Different caps will change the shave.

The top cap is completely brassed, but that's pretty coming and doesn't affect the shave.
If it turns out you really like the razor and want to, you could always get it plated later.

Replating would be great but here in the UK I haven't heard of any specialist razor replating services, I think there was one but is no longer trading.

The raw brass all polished up looks amazing
The top cap has more red in it and with the rest of the razor being a little more yellow hue to it
To me it looks stunning with a nice Shine.
Love all my Gillette NEWs
Enjoy your shaves:)

Congratulation on a great vintage Gillette. As to the differences a cap makes, its minuscule in my experience. Just add later and enjoy. :a29:

Thats a nice SC and it has the proper SC cap.

Notice the tabs on each corner of the caps.

SC left, LC right.

Those corner tabs mate with the machined cut outs in the SC base locking the blade down very tightly and securely. Again, SC left, LC right.

As mentioned above, the SC came with one of, I think, seven different caps. All work fine and change the efficiency slightly. The SC cap, which you have, offers the most blade exposure of all caps on that razor. The difference I found between the proper SC cap and the post war Tech cap was one clean up.

The proper SC cap will only fit the Gillette NEW SC base. It will not fit any other baseplates because only the SC base has the relief cut outs for the corner tabs.

One member here measured the gaps on 7 different SC razors and found all were exactly .023". When he measured several difference LC gaps he found that gaps varied by as much as .017" between razors.

The biggest difference I found between the two is the amount of baseplate support each lend the blade. The SC is one of the most rigid designs I've used, or seen. Its also one of the smoothest razors I've used.

As far as how it shaves compared to the LC. In my experience its a no contest. The SC shaved me where the LC couldnt. The thread below is why.

Gillette NEW LC Not Cutting It

Thats not to say the LC is a poor razor, its not. Its a very nice razor but it wouldnt give me the shave I wanted. The SC can, easily.

Enjoy that razor, its about as good as it gets, at any price.

You're welcome. I'm happy to help. Theres a lot to read around the forum on the NEW SC. I'll start you off with this thread and this post.

Gillette Short Comb (SC) admiration

So I have come to a decision and picked a razor. It was hard for me to discern and so I shaved quite a few days before coming to this conclusion.

I used the same soap for all shaves and it was super runny. Absolutely no cushion, just a slippery medium which enabled me to feel the cutting action of the blade. Shaving WTG & XTG there was no difference I could feel. But where it gets tricky is ATG, I felt no difference anywhere until I shaved the mustache area. This patch of hair for me is dense and the individual hairs are thick. So for any razor, this is a challenge. I once tried ATG with my ATT H2 and I could feel the edge of the blade flex down in to my skin.

Both are very very smooth and with no blade flex. But it was only ATG on my mustache where there was a trace of difference. So the top spot for rigidity is the Wolfman. But I'm talking a minutia of difference.

It is so small a difference I had doubts so to be certain, I had been shaving with both everyday till SEptember 1st, shaving half my face with one and switching to use the other on the other half. I would switch razors to the other half the next day and I have been getting consistent results.

So Wolfman it is. But if the Wolfman is a 10 in rigidity the SC is a 9.8. So there it is

Based on reading this thread right before hopping in the shower, I took a New SC for its maiden voyage (with me). Oh my! One of my easiest and best shaves yet.
