Gillette NEW ID Request, DE Opinions wanted

Hi all,

I am borrowing a NEW from a friend because I was hoping to try something slightly more aggressive than what I had been using. Here is a picture of the underside of the base plate. The handle that comes with it is the ball end. I checked the image in this thread but did not find one that matched exactly. The closest was probably the NEW deluxe, but the stamping on it is on either side of the handle screw, where on mine the stamping is near the bottom. But this one is definitely a long tooth (I compared it to a short vs long tooth in another post that I don't have handy).

Some background information on trying a new razor for more aggressiveness. The first razor I tried 8 months ago was a RazoRock Classic Hammer. Once I started to get the hang of DE shaving, I tried some new razors to get the closest shave (my facial hair grows pretty quickly - if I don't shave every day, I look quite stubbly the next day). Here are the razors that I have since tried:

  • 1962 Slim Adjustable
  • 1950 SuperSpeed
  • 1948 WWII Tech
  • Pre-2010 Mühle
  • the NEW (unknown) that I'm posting about

The Slim would give me a good shave if I had it dialed up to 8 or 9 for every pass. The Mühle gave me by far the best shave, but was quite unforgiving, and almost too much for me. The NEW seems to work well, but I'm hoping for something slightly more aggressive than it is (but a bit less than the original R41). I had thought about picking up one of the newer R41 models that have been "tamed" somewhat but didn't know if I should just stick with the NEW.

So I would appreciate the opinions of the more-experienced with various razors! Should I just go with the NEW, or get a new R41, or possibly a different razor?

Cheers!

Yes, the Berkshire, that is the one! Thanks much for the ID. I have never had much luck on mr-razor's site; as thorough as it is, I rarely have good luck in finding what I'm looking for.

Edit #2: No, I sadly do not have the case nor the blade pack for it.

The New DeLuxe has a flat bottom plate.

Here is my side by side comparison image of various Gillette OC heads.

A heavier handle will make the NEW a little more aggressive. I use a BRW Bull Mastiff most days, and it is just about perfect for me. You could try a Weber bulldog or a UFO. Or add weight to a stock handle: they tend to be hollow.

A NEW Deluxe will be more aggressive too. There are 15-mm and 17-mm variations, of which I find the 17-mm a bit milder. But both are a little more aggressive than a standard NEW.

Finally you could consider a Fatip. I find mine a little more aggressive than a NEW Deluxe.

Or in shorthand: Fatip > NEW Deluxe 15-mm > NEW Deluxe 17-mm > NEW with heavy handle > NEW with stock handle

Thanks, this is good info! I had heard of the Fatip but didn't know much about it. I will have to look into a NEW deluxe to see if I can find one. For the time being, I will see if the thread on my RazoRock classic hammer is the same as the NEW, and try that handle. That thing is a beast!

Out of curiosity, how does the Fatip compare to both the old and new Mühle R41?

The Fatip is a bit more effective but not as functional as the 2010/R41. The 2010 R41 is very aggressive and can yeild a bad shave result if not used with caution and expertise. There is a learning curve but the end result is worth it. The Fatip is less aggressive yet more effective with smoother shave result. It dont require to much learning, I and many others need to put a heavier handle on it for better results. It transforms the FaTip into an almost identical higher end Joris which is 5 times more in pri$e. The Fatip and Joris have 95% similar heads which is why they are almost identical, the heavier handle on the Fatip does the trick...here is a thread devoted to the Italian made Fatip and its French finished Joris

Thanks, alex2363! That link provides a lot of good info on the FaTip/Jorus. I'm still reading through it.

By the way, the RazoRock hammer handle plus the NEW head. The extra heft from the handle definitely improved my shave. All the same, I'm interested in trying both the FaTip as well as a newer model Mühle R41 to see how they compare.
