What's new

Gillette 7 O'clock (yellow) tore me up

The only blade I don't like (or does not like me) so far.

Merkur's were allright
Personna Reds were better
Astra's were outstanding, I think this is going to be my blade but before I buy a few hundred of them I want to get the rest of the sample pack a go. The Gillette's were just downright disappointing, this is the first razor burn and irritation I've had DE shaving.

Anyone else have a similar experience with the "yellow jackets" ?

I like the Yellows and you'll likely hear from plenty of others that do as well. However, I recently did a shave comparison between Gillette Yellows and Super Iridium and Super Iridium is my preference.

(Just realized I've only used an Astra once. Should try again.)

I've been reading a lot about the Super Iridiums (not in my WCS sample pack). I'll have to try them before I make up my mind.

Edit- Just pulled the trigger on a pack !

If you are relatively new to DE shaving, don't give up on them yet. Come back to them a couple months. They are a very sharp blade, and can be a little unforgiving compared to some other blades. Personally, I like the Yellow Russians.

BTW ... since you like the Astras, make sure you try the Shark Super Chromes.

I have the same feedback on the Indian black super platinum 7O'Cs

From my experience and what I hear on the boards about the Yellow jackets, IMHO, these two are some of the sharpest blades around. While this may sound like blasphemy, IMO they are in the same league as the feather if not higher. However I also notice these are thicker than the feather. the bevel and angle of making the edge may make them very sharp for that first shave.

I strictly use a Ball end Tech or a Fatboy / Slim on a 3 for the first shave with my black. The 2nd shave onwards they are the smoothest blades for around 4-5 shaves more !!!

You could look at a less aggressive razor for that first one or two shave maybe a tech or an adjustable dialed down to a 2 or a 3 ? Also go extremely easy on the pressure for that first shave. I use 0-pressure and let the razor head weight do the job !!

And there I was considering to buy a Gillette 7 o'clocks to try out. Will re-think that one...

Has anyone tried the Feathers? I am just getting started on DE shaving and have ordered a pack of Feathers and a [pack of Personna Reds with my Progress (having used straights and a Gem only so far)
Thanks.

Rocketeer & beyboo -> All good thoughts guys, I'll try to keep them in mind. Thanks

You definitely owe it to yourself to try the Super Iridiums as well. Smoothest blades I've tried so far and sharp as well.

My first shaves with the Yellow 7s did not go well, so I shelved them for a while, and am revisiting them this week.

I just had my second shave with one and I'm happy to report that it's going much better. Two irritation-free, BBS shaves so far. If I can get five good shaves from one blade, I'll be very happy.

I had a Yellowjacket tear me apart once. I tossed that blade but kept the pack. Tried another when on a different day and it was wonderful. I now have 60 of them in my shave den.

Maybe you got a bad blade?

Another good point, I'll keep the rest of the pack and circle back around when I'm done with the rest of the sampler tour.

A perfect example of YMMV. For me the yellow 7 o'clock is THE perfect blade. Iridiums are just 'nice' in comparison...

But I understand that they can seem harsh coming from red Personnas. I went by a different route: Personnas were my first choice, then I tried Feathers and lost a lot of blood, dialed one down to Iridiums (still a wee bit to harsh) and found perfection in the yellows.

I'm waiting till I get my alum / RazoRock before I try the feathers (just because of the hype)... But point taken...

I didn't like the Gillette Yellows either.. Tried around 4 blades, but none of them proved to be good. Ahh well. It's great that there pleanty of other blades out there:thumbup:

After reading this, I decided to try one yesterday - a vendor had sent me a pack as a sample. [My standard is a Feather or an occasional Kai in a Futur or E89]

It was the worst shave that I had in decades! My neck was irritated and I had razor burn and weepers - my neck was irritated all day!

Terrible blade!

As someone posted, a perfect example of "YMMV" :biggrin1: I really like the Yellows. I've only had one bad blade in the dozens I've used over the last yar or so. However, my favorite blade is definitely Feather. I bought a 250-pack.

yellow 7 o'clocks are my go to blades. I have tried Super Iridium a few times and while they worked well I still prefered the yellows. The only blades that I like nearly as much are feathers.
