Gillette 7 o'clock black not good in EJ89

hey guys

last week I started to use Gillette 7 o'clock blacks in my EJ89 they have been pretty bad....it feels blunt and gives a bad shave but I have had the same blades in my slim they have been fine

anybody else experience this?

Not all razor/blade combos are a good match. What settings were you using on your Slim?

Of course, the Slim will make all but the worst blades a champ, since you have the ability to adjust the razor to fit the blade's capabilities.

Haven't tried them in an EJ89, but I haven't found a razor yet that was a mismatch for the G7OCBlack.

Hope you work it out, because that is one fantastic blade.

At first I thought it was a dud blade so I opened a new pack and the same thing was happening barely getting a close shave felt blunt

Maybe you prefer a larger blade gap. The head geometry's not quite the same between the two, but the blade gap of the DE89 head is the equiv. of about setting 4 on the Slim.

Blacks work fine for me in a Futur and a Feather with a rubber washer. 4-5 excellent shave ea.

It sounds like a blade angle issue. Blacks are definitely not blunt.

I'm surprised at your experience with the EJ and blacks. Right now that is my go to combination and I have a heavy beard that's pretty course. Only goes to show ya how variable our hobby is!

Booyah! Just came back to the DE89 on an Ikon handle loaded with a black this morning after a two-week stint with a FaTip.

Heaven! This combo rocks!

That's strange, considering that the other Gillette blades (green, yellow, silver blues) have given me very good shaves in the EJ 89..

I never cared for the Blacks. They aren't as sharp as some people lead others to believe.

Haven't tried the blacks but the yellows work like a charm for me. My favorite combo though for the DE89 is none other than the SI's

Sure they are, but some blades work differently for people. Folks rave about Feathers and Astras, but I can't stand them.

The EJ89 is a mild-aggressive razor, so sharper blades would work well. I've tried feather, Personna Meds/Labs but always returned to the Gillette series because of their smoothness and sharpness. Have yet to try the Astra SPs yet though.

Right now, I'm using Muhle R89 with Gillette Bleue Extra (the new, Russian version) and it's great. Very close shave with no irritation. I'm surprised that it isn't working for you with the blacks, since all Russian blades I've tried in this head have worked really good.
