Getting an Itch for an Adjustable - Vision vs. Progress vs. FatBoy

I'm not a collector, I just want a good shave. So I don't care if the razor is made by Merkur, Gillette, Muhle, etc. I'd prefer a razor in the 4" range because I love my Merkur 38M. What's the best adjustable razor?

I nominate Gillette Slim Adjustable or a black handle super adjustable for the appeal of the longer handle. Aside from the sex appeal of the extra bulk and weight, the Fat Boy seems to have no advantages over it and Fat Boys command higher prices.

I REALLY love the look of the black super adjustables! I think i saw a gold and black one... sexy.

As much as I love my Gillette Slim Adjustable I've got to strike a blow for the Merkur Progress. Buying one of these will give you the ability to dial further than the Slim. It has a wider range if you will.

I can only put my vote in for the Fatboy. I just had my first DE shave this morning, and it is that razor that I chose. I bought it here for $26, and I do not find it unwieldy or too heavy. I started shaving a few years ago, starting with the disposable Gillettes, moving to the Fusion, and then to the Fusion Power.

When saying that the Fatboy commands a higher price, why does it matter. My main hobby is collecting fountain pens, where many of the good ones can cost hundreds of dollars. This often spawns topics that evaluate and compare different pens at radically different price points. Like a $100 pen to a $500 one. Comparing a $15 razor to a $25 razor just doesn't seem like a big deal. I would not make the decision based on price, but on which razor has better balance in your hand.

Just my 2¢.

I've shaved with both a Futur and Fatboy. Both are great but I prefer the Futur. I prefer the weight and the design of the safety bars on it. As the saying goes, YMMV but you won't be disappointed with either of them.

Another vote for the Futur. Everyone loves the progress too.

I wouldn't say everyone loves the Progress.
There's been a lot of posts with QC issues with this razor.
That being said I own 2 pre Dovo Progresses and they're great razors.
The Fatboy and the Progress are very evenly matched, size and weight is very close.
The Fatboy has a clear advantage in grip and ease of blade change.
I've never owned a Vision and considering the issues people have with it I never will unless somebody gives me one.
I think it's a ugly over sized, over priced monster of a razor.

B&B membership has its percs
Bob has the grip right, I just didn't get the Mergress/Progress slickness when in an already wet environment, and TTO versus putting maybe sleepy fingers at risk makes Merkur a distant, had time to do it better but failed, after-ran .. but TEHO

Hi Chris,

I agree with you about the super adjustable being a good razor with a long handle. The slim has a longer handle than a fatboy, but only maybe half an inch longer, if that.

I've used each of those razors mentioned, plus a few other Gillette adjustables, and the fatboy is a different animal from the others.

The weight is different with a fatboy, and the way it's distributed is different as well. The handle length and grip are also not the same as those other razors. The main thing though..........the head design on a fatboy isn't like any of those other two mentioned here. The FB has a much more 'domed' look to it, which results in a different angle of attack.

As a result, the shave with a fatboy is totally unlike those other razors. That means that different blades can work well in a fatboy, and not in others, and vice versa. I'm not saying the fatboy works well for everyone, but you have to try one to really find out. Heh, believe it or not.

The Fatboy was my first DE razor & still my favorite. I also use a Mergress, SS, 38C, Krona in rotation so really can't lose. Everyone will have their own favorite.

I'd say knock the vision off that list, and put Futur in its place.

As a Futur and Fatboy owner I would say that the Futur has great weight behind it, a wide range of adjustment, and killer looks. The Fatboy has a much lighter feel to it, but still delivers superb shaves. And TTO is the coolest thing on the planet.

WHOA! The Futur must be mega weighty. The Fatboy feels pretty heavy to me.

So true. My fav is the Slim. I love it. I want to give it a name and put a little bow on it every night before I go to bed. Seriously, that's how well it performs for me. My face has never been happier since I met the Slim.

I think the Vision is 8" long. The handle might be 4" in diameter at its widest point.

One picture is worth a thousand words.
