Getting a New Soap

I just started wetshaving this weekend and I'm loving it. Right now I'm using a Caswell-Massey Sandalwood soap. I'm looking to explore other soaps and different smells. Any tips for what soap I should try next?

You can find Van Der Hagen's Luxury or Deluxe soap at Walgreen's. They're both good.

As for the Internet, well you can order anything you want. In which case I would recommend in no particular order:

1. Tabac
2. Mitchell's Wool Fat aka THE FAT
3. ARKO
4. Proraso green or white
5. Mike's Natural Soaps

Just about anything would be a step in the right direction after C.M.. Find a maker and a scent that appeal to you and let it rip. There are many different options that you can choose from.

just use the search function. many many many many many great soaps and many replies will come back. if u can stop by a shop that allows u to smell some samples, all the better. I'm rather spoiled with some great shaving supply pharmacies close by.

westcoastchaving
shoeboxshaveshop
all great places for products and many other sites, visit the B&B vendor page for further details and updates on coupons and sales

Thanks for the help. I've seen that a lot of people like Tabac and ARKO. There's also a place that sells some locally made soaps that I am planning to check out

Get there are quickly as possible: nearly all reviews indicate Caswell Massey is absolute crap, and one of the worst products on the market. If you are loving wet shaving now, you will love it much more with a soap that properly lathers, and provides proper protection for your face.

Wal-Mart also stocks the Van Der Hagen soap.

I would avoid that. The vast majority of locally made soaps that say they are for shaving are total disasters. The average soap maker has no idea how a proper shaving soap should work, and simply takes their bath soap recipe, and adds clay too it. The results are totally useless for the purpose of shaving.

A couple of other things to check out: at your local mall, Bath and Body Works often stocks C.O. Bigelow Shaving Cream. It comes in a metal tube, and is a wonderful product; it's the same thing as the world famous Proraso, just under a different name. Your local mall may also have an Art of Shaving Store. Their razors, and brushes are way too highly priced but their shaving creams, and shaving soaps are some of the best on the market.

THIS. I totally forgot about it.

You should check out an American soap that goes under the name: Portland General Store - Whiskey Shaving soap. Its all natural ingredients.
I am totally in love with that one. Beside that one; Mitchell Wools Fat and Mikes Natural Soap is pretty popular around here.

I didn't realize that CM was so bad. If that's the case I can't wait to get something worthwhile.

Thanks for the heads up on the local stuff. That will save me money and headaches.

I just received my latest order from Mystic Water Soap (Hi Michelle) of Bay Rum, Lime, Prospect Creek, and Green Fairy. A sample of Eucalyptus & Spearmint was included free in my box (Thanks Michelle!).

Bay Rum is my favorite scent and was purchased after I tried a sample and a shave stick.

I have yet to try my new scents, but here is what I can gather through the plastic wrap:
Lime- smells like fresh lime zest, possibly of Skittles
Prospect Creek- peppermint gum and candy canes (I'm excited to try this one as I am partial to mint)
The Green Fairy- deep anise and black licorice flavors (I bought this as it piqued my curiosity)
Eucalyptus & Spearmint- super minty but slightly medicated smell

I also have Irish Traveler (previous order) which has a fresh and clean scent and keeps me feeling sophisticated even at work.

Hope my descriptions can help you find your new soap.

I'm surprised to see that nobody has recommended mama bear's soaps yet. They might not be the best of the best, but they have a giant selection of scents to choose from. I recently got ye older barbershop and mentholated lemon ice, and I'm pretty happy with both of them.

I'm not. Mama Bear's used to be considered great, when the artisan market was all melt and pour soaps. That is no longer the case, and Mama Bears is now vastly overshadowed by superior creations such as QCS, Mike's, Mystic Waters, and Razorock.

These superior products are available for the same cost, or a little more than Mama Bear's thus there is simply no reason to buy Mama Bear's anymore.
