What's new

GEM id help please

pick these up recently. i understand the black handled one is a push button type (year?). The white handled one looks relatively new.

the most intriguing one to me is the silver colored one. its odd because the top guard flips backward over the blade as shown...says pat applied...is this a precursor to the 1912?

I'm always wary of the 1924 as it seems boderline aggressive and the head retains water thats drips out in use!

Note that you refer to these as "Gem" razors, but the third one, the 1924 model, is actually an Ever-Ready. To my knowledge, unlike some of the other American Safety Razor Co. razors, this model was never sold under the Gem name, but only as an Ever-Ready.

Regards,
Tom

thanks, when were those manufactured? it looks relatively modern in its design/fabrication
Vintage advertising indicates the Featherweight was sold during the early 1950s. BTW, trade papers of the day tell us that the Push Button was introduced in 1958.

Just a note on the Featherweight, I'm not sure why, but these seem to be abundant in near new old stock condition (I've got 6 or 8, and 3/4 could nearly pass for new). And in recent trials, I found the shave rivaled the much lauded (and loved) 1912.

I still haven't tried the 1924. I have a couple, guess I need to give it a go!

Really? Where were you when I asked for information for the Wiki? Thanks! :thumbup1:
Glad to help! Although vintage advertising can only give us a rough idea of when ASR razors were produced, that's pretty much the only written documentation we have.

For example, here's the only ad I've run across showing the razor we call the G Bar:

proxy.php

I've been told that this ad is from early 1958, before the Push Button was introduced for Christmas sales that year. Considering the graphics of the ad and the plastic case the razor came in, that date may be correct. As far as actual production dates go, we may never know.

-Clarke

EDIT: Verified date of ad is 7 June 1958.

Great ad!!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
A while back, there was an auction on eBay for a bunch of "G-Bars" in an original store display. The "G-Bar" was named the "Heavy Flat Top". I wish I could find the link and the date, but my past post mojo isn't working tonight.
