Gem Damaskeene vs Micromatic

doctordial

my brain goes "thonk"
I just recently purchased a Gem Damaskeene and to me it just dosen't get as close as a 1924 for me.It seems to me the blade is back far from the edge of the bar. I was wondering how the Micromatic is. Is the closer to the edge of the bar and how does it shave? I would like a SE that shaves as well or close to my 39C.

I own all of these razors on inspection the blade physically appears to be closer to the edge on Gem OCMM. The bar of 1924, like the Gem 1912, curves downward. In this sense the shaving edge of both the OCMM and the 1924 appear to be similar though I think it's closer on the 1924 (unless someone has a better eye). From my personal experience I find the 1924 to be a tad more aggressive then the OCMM (that's if you were referring to the Micromatic open comb). If you can find one I think you should try a Damaskeene open comb it will be a smooth shaver but it will also shave close. In the Micromatic series the Gem open comb should give you a close aggressive shave.

+1 on the OC Damaskeene. Very smooth and close shave!

All of them should shave as close, or closer than the 39C. How many passes are you doing? Are you doing an "against the grain" pass? The
"against the grain" pass is where the SE magic happens.

I'm doing 3-4 passes and against the grain as well. I have a 1924 which I do like. Somtimes I use it and follow up with my 39c to get what the 1924 missed.

I can shave with my Fatboy on 9 and another pass with the OCMM will make it seem like I hadn't shaved at all. I can't imagine you'll be left wanting any more aggressiveness or blade exposure. That being said, it isn't a hard razor to learn and will provide you with about as close a shave as you can get.

I received a Clog Pruf last night and had my first SE shave. I got a nice 2 pass BBS and it is still holding up well this morning. It takes a different grip when holding it and I had to relearn the angle while taking shorter strokes than I do with a DE. I would check out the SE shavewiki, it had some good tips and pictures.

Which Micromatic? There are three of them: MMOC, MM Cog Pruf, and the MM Flying Wing, in descending order of aggressiveness.

I love the Ever-Ready 1924 and I love the MM Clog Pruf. I like all the others. It is a personal thang, that only you can judge.
