Nice introduction, there are a couple of boo-boos in there though. Much seems to be indirectly lifted without credit from a 2003 Rick Propas (Penguin) article.

That shows a disassembled pen.. I thought you couldn't take them apart?

That's a vintage Pelikan 400NN, like the 400 they do come apart ... not easily, but they do. Modern M-series (M150, M200, M250, M400, M600) pens have a snap fit filler that will ruin the barrel end upon removal. They are not meant to be serviced and the assembly can be replaced only by Pelikan.

A good read until I came to this phrase which has set my teeth on edge!

"you should not borrow the pen to anyone else"

Saying that, Pelikans are my favourite FPs and I have a few of them!

Yikes! I should have checked before I put up a link to plagiarized material.

Thanks for the article!

* Doug, thanks for the info on the 400s. i thought both the vintage and modern ones could be taken apart. Good to know.

Why shouldn't I borrow me pens or anyfink to uvers, lid? I lived in Liverpool for three years, and I heard a lot that set my teeth on edge.

From that article: "Pelikan and other manufacturers use 14K or 18K gold nibs that are hand made. As such, every nib is different and it must be broken in to your hand. This will take a few weeks, depending on how much you write by hand, but once it is written-on, you will be able to tell the difference. However, that also means that you should not borrow the pen to anyone else because the way they write is different from yours and it may change the smoothness of your nib."

I thought that was a myth. It takes a lot of writing to wear down tipping material.
I've loaned pens to friends before and never noticed anything strange after they were returned. I would imagine that Sailor's 21 karat gold nibs are pretty soft, but the tipping material should be pretty robust.

I don't think that the wearing in of a pen nib is a complete crock but it takes a lot longer than a few weeks. I have picked up some old, well worn pens that will only write smoothly when held in what feels a strange position to me.

Know what you mean about Liverpool Andy. Not that I can complain, coming from Cardiff...

 I know what you mean. I spent a lot of time in north Wales, but that may be yet another type of strange.

The North Walians hate us South Walians more than they hate the English. Well they think we are English pretending to be Welsh!

Just jealous of our rugby teams I reckon.
