Futur or Progress?

I am contemplating picking up a Merkur adjustable. I can't decide which one... anyone care to weigh in?

I currently have an HD, Slant, and have tried most of the common Gillettes including adjustables.

I started with the Progress and eventually got a Futur later and actually like both. Realize that I've never had any problems with the Progress, but if you search B&B it seems like others have.

I'll start off by saying the Futur just edges out the Progress for me, but just barely. Mostly from just a QC aspect, I think the Futur is a better razor, cooler design and once you find a blade you like - smoother shaver. If you can get one on the bst it's even better, but even new from WCS or QEDUsa they can be had fairly reasonably.

OTOH, if you get one without problems the Progress design makes clearing out stubble easy and I find it a little easier to handle and a bit more forgiving with a wider variety of blades. Also, with Mer's upgrade or Cooncatbob's knobs and handles the Progress can really be pimped out and upgraded later.

Either hold their value fairly well (esp if you pick up a used one), so if you don't like it and buy it reasonably you can at the very least turn it back around on the bst board if you don't like it.

I would have to say the Futur. Cost much less when you consider that there is no modifications needed and the shave is a very smooth one.

If you already have the HD, I would go for the Futur for something a little different.

I alternate between both and like each for different reasons. It's a good contrast.

I don't know anything about the Progress from personal experience, but I've been using a Futur as my primary razor for about a year now (others razors include HD, 40's style SS, Slim Adjustable, and GEM Pushbutton) and it nearly ended my RAD. I have no other razor that compares to the Futur. It's a very smooth shaver once you get used to it (it's heavy), but it will give you great shaves!

Never tried a progress but I really like my Futur. I really like the weight of the head.

I've tried both and slightly prefer the Progress (Mergress), but the Futur is a great razor and I have used it with no complaints. It's not as slippery as people worry that it is (I mean, don't polish it with wax and dip the handle in baby oil before you shave, but there's no need to sandblast the handle either!).
