What's new

From EjDe89 to.

I like my de89 but ready for something new. Maybe something alittle more aggressive. What the next step up? What do you guys think?

Well the 89 is a great razor you could try some different blades to get a bit more out if it depending on what you are using. Different blades can really change up the shave.

The only other razor I use which I use more often is a single edge 1930's ever ready streamline. When I am going out late on a weekend I might fatboy a mild setting. So it's like streamline 70% DB89 28% FB 2%.

I've played with a dozen razors, and I've found more aggressive ... but I keep coming back. Put a feather in it and see how you like it. The DE89 is destined to be one of the classic head designs of all time.

And put it on a HEAVY handle, too.

I have an old Hoffritz slant that's pretty cool. Maybe something vintage?

Re: aggressiveness and "stepping up", it seems to me there's one way of shaving in which the razor plays a big part and another in which your technique overwhelms the razor and they're all doing about the same job. I fall into the latter camp and get the same great 3-pass shave with the slant as I do with my '59 Flair Tip.

They're all good...

Ikon bulldog. But get one of the other makers, like Weber. Ikon is a great handle, but he does not have a great rep around here.

Putting the DE89 head on a solid steel handle with some heft to it is like turning it into a power tooll. Others will tell you the same thing. Makes a HYOOGE difference.

Here is an example of the breed.

As a new convert, briefly tried a Merkur 1904 open comb (more irritating, worse shave) and am going to try a Slant. If I never post again, you'll know that the Slant got me!

89 head on a heavy handle. This makes sense! Why did they stick that hollow tube or whatever on there in the first place?

I thought I was gonna cut my ear off when my wife found her dad's Hoffritz slant but guess what? It's just a razor. Load her up and shave and don't let on that you're afraid; it'll be great.

Go with a Futur and you could possibly find yourself not buying another razor. This one is truly a RAD killer for me.

I started with DE 86, same head different handle, the moved to vintage razors, back to the DE86, and now i'm trying out Weber. I must say DE 89 head is one of the best out there and if i was going to do it over again i would get a different handle. Perhaps the barley one.

I have the cousin, the DE87, which is great.
for next step up, my suggestion is a Weber, marvelous medium range razor.

All the above suggestions are cool - but I'd suggest that an easy way to get the blade gap you crave is to SHIM it.

Currently I run my EJ89 Barley with 2 shims in it (2 used blades with only about a mm of the cutting edges trimmed off with a SHARP pair of scissors); you get that classic head design with a bigger gap.

another thought is shims. I cut two used razors (cut the shard edge off) and made some shims. I use them with my de barley chrome and crystals. Have seem some improvement in longevity.
