French Press for tea

Does anyone else use a French Press for tea? I find that I can make a lot of green tea at once without oversteeping it. Add in the ease of cleaning, and I think you can't get much better for tea (IMO).

Any tips on using a press for tea?

I use mine for tea all the time. It's pretty much the only thing I do use for tea, really.

Tips? Maybe pour down the inside wall of the carafe rather than directly onto the dry leaves until you've got a water "cushion" under them to prevent damage.

Doesn't matter as much for gunpowder, yerba mate, rooibos, etc..

Standard things like pre-heating your press before steeping help too.

I have a small FP used only for tea, and a 12 cup I use for coffee. I would caution you about brewing coffee in the same press you use for tea, as I don't think you could ever clean all of the oils from the filter and they could impart unwanted flavors in your tea.

Ah, thanks! It isn't even possible if you only brew the very very occasional pot of coffee?

In a word, Yes.

Only drink loose tea now.

By the way, I only use tea in my press and not coffee. I found if you use a press for both it screw-ups the taste of the tea/coffee.

I would guess that eventually, any residual coffee flavors would get washed out to the point that you wouldn't notice so much, but those first several pots of tea after a coffee brew are going to be tainted.

You could try using one press, and if you find that your tea is permanently tainted, you could always devote that press to coffee and get another press for tea only - they aren't very expensive.

I do think the flavors would be tainted, but i use my pot mostly for coffee. A thorough soaking in a soap or vinegary solution is bound to remove unwanted oils.

This seals the deal for me. My favorite kind of tea!

I had it in Morocco a few years ago, and I have made it my mission to exactly replicate it. I have come close, but I do not know if I will ever master it. Let me know if you have any good recipes.

I use Adagio gunpowder tea, Sugar in the Raw, and some no-name dried mint. I steep the mint in water while I rinse the tea leaves. This lets a lot of mint get into the mixture while it cools the water down for the tea.

I use a french press for tea when I'm out on tour. I've got a 4 cup electric kettle and press I keep in my workbox. One thing that I've learned is don't plunge the filter all the way down it can sometimes bruise the leaves and bring out the bitter flavors that can come out from over steeping. I usually just bring the filter down to just into the water and pour into my mug.

Thanks for the tip.

I like strong tea but sometimes it is bitter.

Got to give it a try.

I believe muzitea.com has a Morrocan Mint tea and tealeaves.com

NB. oops Muzi has Caravan Mint but its the same idea. http://muzitea.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MUZI_CA&Category_Code=003 I might try some for the summer. They make really good teas. I think they are the best in town next to Tealeaves but I drink too much to be able to drink them all the time.

Have you seen the Breville kettle that has different temperatures for different teas? You choose green, black, etc... and it boils it to the proper temperature for that tea.

Thanks! Plus if I decide to give coffee another shot, I can make some decent coffee with it.

No dont do it! I made one pot of French Roast in it and never could get the taste out. I scrubbed and soaked it in Pink Solution (a cleaner that cleans every thing awesomely) that I used to clean my oven range and I still could not get the taste out. I have two bodums now in case I make coffee for guests.

I'm going to get another one today for coffee, don't worry!

Try using something specifically for that purpose. Oh, I don't know, maybe like Cafiza, Joe Glo, or some other cleaner designed specifically for coffee.
