Freedom Phone

Anyone purchased this?

Im curious as to how well it works.

Wouldn't mind giving it a whirl...need alternatives to big tech
and their bag of tricks.

It wil most likely work just as most android stuff. And there are more small brand manufacturers

privacy wise I would not have extreme hopes. So far if government’s really want they can crack it. And some apps might not work via vpn and encryption.

Looks similar to LineageOS+gapps but with adblockers preinstalled. I don't see the added value when you already have Lineage and projects like /e/OS unless you want to reduce your effort for initial set-up.

Just check to see if there is cell service in your area for that carrier..

At&t where i was was terrible, i had to hunt around and switched to tracphone as they used verizon towers.

Seems it's made in China, based on a much cheaper phone: The Daily Beast
Well that’s a big red flag. I watched a segment of Lara Logan on Fox Nation where she interviewed William Binney and he was claiming that Chinese manufactured chips likely had back doors built into the firmware that would allow the Chinese government access to any phone they wanted access to.

That doesn’t sound so secure to me.

Dude. No. Stop. This. Is. A. Scam.

This is a re-branded Umidigi A9 pro, which you can buy online for $119.

The operating system is a big question mark, no actual details have been released, but it seems to be just open source Lineage OS, a variant of Android. With "no tracking", you won't get Google Play Services, which means no Google apps - no Gmail, no Maps, no YouTube. You'll have to sideload all your apps, since you won't have the app store - which means no security and no protection against every shady scam app out there who will immediately start targeting you now.

The whole "no censoring in the app store" is a red herring too - you WANT someone weeding out the kiddie porn and the fake Instagram app that's actually mining bitcoin and the calculator app that's actually a keylogger sending your bank passwords to a server overseas. Those aren't theoretical cases, Google and Apple shut down thousands of those apps every day.

And you know that as soon as you turn on a cell phone, a hundred companies immediately start tracking your every move. There literally is no such thing as security or privacy once you connect to any mobile carrier (especially not on a cut-rate phone like this.)

Did you notice on the website that every "information" link is actually just a "buy it now"?

This is the modern version of the fast-talking huckster rolling into town and conning the locals into buying patent medicines, it's a straight cash grab aimed at non-technical people who fall for the nonsense patter. They know that "need alternatives to big tech and their bag of tricks" will get an emotional response from people like you who don't have the technical background to understand that YOU ARE BEING LIED TO.

Basically, this phone will make Erik Finman a $200 profit, and every right wing radio huckster pushing it will get about a $50 commission. You'll get a ****ty phone that doesn't do anything it promises, and pretty much won't work for anything you'd use a cellphone for. Assuming it ever actually ships, and they don't just take your money and run.

If you're still tempted, wait until some of these phones end up in the real world and read reviews FROM PEOPLE WHO AREN'T COMMISSIONED FOR SALES. Theverge.com has been talking a lot about it, they'll likely get and review one when it ships, I'll post a link whenever it comes up.

No different than what goes on with Apple and Android devices. Cellular communications are not secure. Neither are email communications. Sad state of modern life.

Truth! But Apple and Google would have you think that they are above all that and respect your privacy with the utmost respect. The real truth is that Google receives a good amount of money from the NSA to supple them with our phone metadata. My guess is that Apple is right there with their hand out. I don’t trust any of them.

Is that sweet looking lady in your avatar the one you refer to as “The War Department “?
