Frag Acquisitions

There seems to be a strong level of admiration for this one, but I usually can not stand anything with Vetiver in it. Took a gamble as it's been mentioned to be a Vetiver, for people who don't like Vetiver. Haha.
Tried it on as soon as I got the package open today, and I quite like it. More so when it begins to dry down though.View attachment 1179092
My God Man! Christian Dior "Eau Sauvage" is one of THE best/Classic Fragrances of all times! It's one of my TOP FIVE Favorites! I suspect I have nearly one hundred Fragrances/Colognes/vintage Perfumes/Attars/etc. I'm lucky to own the desirable circa 2012 edition of Eau Sauvage. Enjoy with GUSTO!

Nice buy Doug. Man, I wish I had purchased ABSOLUTE (as opposed to INTENSE). I understand ABSOLUTE is not quite as sweet as INTENSE. If I'm not mistaken, ABSOLUTE is created by the same Nose who made Lalique Encre Noire. The House of Lalique if (imho) perhaps THE best "Niche" quality type Fragrance for a (often on sale) "Designer" cost. I own about six or seven bottles of Lalique Encre Noire (and the Flankers) which I bought at "close out" prices. I know from experience (I'm a Basenotes member since 2003) how this story goes. I.E. get while the gettings good. At twenty five dollars (or less I paid) per bottle, it's a "no Brainer" for me to now stock up on the Lalique Encre Noire Fragrances. Oooh, I also ordered Lalique "LION" last night! Other Lalique Fragrances to follow. As much as I LOVE my "Niche" (read expensive) Fragrances, I often rather own six to eight bottles of (highly researched) quality "Designer" Fragrances when on sale/sold at close out prices. Of late, I purchased a few Summer type Fragrances : Nautica Voyage and Nautica Blue (both NIB) for twenty five dollars for TWO (100 ml) bottles. I also found a nice NIB bottle of E. Zegna 100ml bottle of UOMO for $16.99. In fact, wearing it tonight for the first time and I really LIKE it! Uomo is going to be a GREAT Summer Fragrance. Zegna Uomo is a HIGHLY under rated Fragrance. Oooh, I also have a 1.7 oz. bottle of Dior "Fahrenheit" on it's way to me! Stop me, I'm out of control (again!)

Lorenzo Villerosi Acqua di Colonia--classic AdC plus an herbal base. Excellent.
Hello Knize,

Waaay to go! Lorenzo Villoresi ! I use own about six different bottles of Villoresi. Sadly, I'm down to only one which I purchase a few years ago "Piper Nigrum". Still lovely. Enjoy! You have excellent taste btw.

First time shopping at Ross (decent selection & good prices), first bottle of Nautica. Nice summer, casual scent.

First bottle of Aspen, ordered online. Picked up a vintage bottle of the AS last week in the wild and wanted this to pair it with.

Hi Leo, nice finds! I too just scored TWO NIB bottles of 100ml Nautica (Voyage and Blue) at T.J. Maxx. I paid a total of twenty five dollars for the two bottles! SCORE! You are correct, it will be a lovely Summer Fragrance. Nautica is VERY popular and sold out on some on line sights. Oooh, if you can find it cheap, do NOT miss out buying a bottle of E. Zegna UOMO. I paid $16.99 for a NIB 100ml bottle today. I'm wearing/testing it for the first time tonight and it's wonderful! Another awesome Fragrance for the Summer. Enjoy.

Hey Pete! Great Minds think alike! I have a bottle of Lalique LION on it's way to me now! I'm a HUGH Fan of Lalique House. I've about six bottles of Encre Noire (including Flankers). All, each one EXCELLENT! That being said, I have never tried GG. I'm sorry I missed out trying that one. I do however also have a nice bottle of Dior Fahrenheit on it's way to me (with the LION). Enjoy your awesome Colognes!

HOLY $#!t Peter! ANUBIS! Wow! Congrats! I've haven't yet tried ANUBIS however, I know of it's rep!
I have recently (again) testing/sampling Milano Montecristo, Etat Libera d' Orange Marquis de Sade, Diptyque Oud Palao, Santa Maria Novella Peau d'Espagne. All excellent Fragrances however (for the win) Rania J. Oud Assam if I were to chose among those I just listed. That being said, I think I'm going to go a completely different direction and order a bottle of Santa Maria Novella "Marescialla" as it's like nothing else! SMN is my favorite house with "Acqua de Cuba and Nostalgia" being my favorites from SMN. My other top favorite is L'Artisan DZING! Man, soooo many great Colognes to chose from these days! Enjoy ANUBIS!

Hugo Boss Number One...a warm floral, honey and patchouli scent. Smooth, warm, a hint of sweetness. This came out in the mid-eighties, was a bit stouter in those days. No doubt reformulated a time or two since then. This cologne is distinctive, likely a dude in a business suit would favor this. I enjoy it as a casual scent though. My first bottle lasted at least a decade, my second was a small one and lived three years. This new bottle will get plenty of use, compliments and "what cologne is that?" My Maine Coon kitty Zoey joined in the photo, and she, like the cologne, is the Number One Boss.
Nice MAINE COON Kitty KUfan. I live in Maine (no Maine Coon at this time) but have a Kitty (Cornish Rex) named Zoe-Bear.
Enjoy BOSS one!

I’ll cheat, as I made the comparison of the two around 7 years ago on Basenotes... The review below still holds:

*This is primarily a review of the vintage EdC of Fougere Royale with a side-by side comparison to the current EdP re-issue...

Fougere Royale EdC (vintage) opens with very aromatic lavender and mild bergamot before quickly transitioning to its primary overall accord as the lavender remains, now coupling with a combination of oakmoss and hay-like coumarin rising from the base, with a very mild cinnamon undertone with mild herbs joining it. During the later stage of the dry-down the scent grows faint with hints of vanilla detectable underneath the rapidly receding herbal green accord. Projection and longevity are well below average, with the scent lasting only 3 hours on skin before it is nearly undetectable.

Fougere Royale EdP (re-issue) opens with a sparkling bergamot mixing with a more subdued lavender than the EdC and a very notable cinnamon or nutmeg undertone. The scent has a very soapy vibe that is missing the oakmoss and coumarin the EdC features so prominently early, instead focusing on the bergamot, lavender and cinnamon solely. This combination holds for most of the scent's duration until the later dry-down, as very subtle oakmoss is revealed as the bergamot and lavender completely dissipate. Joining the just detectable oakmoss is a relatively dry amber that rounds out the scent's development. Projection is average and longevity is below average at about 4-6 hours on skin.

Fougere Royale EdC (vintage) is a fine example of what many of the best old-school fougeres replicate. It is heavily driven by oakmoss and coumarin with aromatic lavender in strong support for the primary accord, and what an accord it is! I did find it a bit smoother and much more wearable than the rough around the edges accord I was expecting based on others who have smelled it before. That said, it was a very pleasant surprise as some of those rough scents like Crown's Fougere and Penhaligons' English Fern were both just too much for me and I really disliked them both. In contrast, Fougere Royale EdC is very wearable, much less vociferous and quite gorgeous and natural smelling with the oakmoss and coumarin really making the composition work. The vintage EdC is as rare as they come and a long since discontinued full bottle may be near impossible to obtain for anywhere near sane money on the aftermarket, but if you get a chance to sample this 4.5 star out of 5 juice that launched the Fougere genre, I highly recommend it.

A brief comment on the EdP Fougere Royale re-issue... I sniffed the reissue first as I had my sample of that one before obtaining the vintage juice and was initially highly impressed. When analyzed as its own scent without the Fougere Royale legacy to live up to the EdP re-issue really does smell great. It is a relatively simplistic composition of bergamot, lavender and cinnamon over a lightly soapy base; nothing more, nothing less. A very clean and easy to wear scent that is stronger in potency and lasts longer than the original while projecting better too. That said, it just does not strike me as a true fougere and when you smell it side-by-side to the EdC its deficiencies are made all the more clear. It also is relatively pricey at $170 (or $600 for the lacquered box version) for 100ml considering it is such a linear simplistic scent no matter how pleasant. I love it, but I find it hard to recommend at that price point and also with the knowledge that it only is a faint shadow of the original EdC. Still, it earns a 3.5 to 4 star out of 5 rating in its own right.

Hello fellow Basenoter, SixCats! saying "Hello".

Love the Carons. I think they are great value and classy!

Hi Sharp,

Ooh the HOUSE of CARON is a good one! Oooh, Caron "YATAGAN" is still in my TOP TEN of all Fragrances! I just LOVE it! I purchased another bottle last year (as backup) during the YATAGAN scare. I search the entire Country and found one PRIVATE small store that had a bottle. I paid a heavy price (compared to the usual price) however, I just could not take the chance of YATAGAN being discontinued/no longer available. I have my NIB botle of YATAGAN stored away for the coming years!

Regards,

SixCats!

I have acquired five bottles of different LVs in the past five months or so. I have always liked the house, in particular the vetiver, for which I have a fairly large decant of somewhere. It is unlike me to buy whole bottles of anything. The recent bottles I got were Patchouli, Piper Nigrum, Musk, AdC, and Uomo, the latter three bought blind, which is uncharacteristic of me in the extreme. I really like each of them. PN used to get a lot of love around here. The Musk is really a nice dark rose. The others are excellent versions of what they are named. I so not get the criticism LV sometimes gets as being amateurish. To me it is more that LV scents are strong and original. Very Italian to me, and to me that is a wonderful thing.

Seems the fever to acquire more fragrances is back...

All cheapies. The Hollister Wave 2 and Perry Ellis Portfolio Red are just different enough not to be too redundant. Both fresh aromatics, sweet and fruity, similar to Invictus Aqua or Montblanc Legend Spirit.

The Oud Mosaic from Banana Republic is the shocker. Quality juice. A long lasting, dirty rose oud. Appropriate for these times of social distancing. Check your local rack stores.
