Foxhole Shavers Club

O’ kaaay, so the VA is off limits here, sorry about that

I have to qualify the following information because this stuff is just from what I have experienced.

I don’t know what the standard flags are for Agent Orange. I know prostate cancer is one of them, I couldn’t tell you anything about liver cancer. Back in the 1980’s I received survey from the government I’m not sure anymore of the department but it was a questionnaire about Agent Orange exposure. (maybe because I worked with the stuff for almost 3 years) Why I got it I have no clue; my point is there are very specific guidelines of what Agent Orange does affect and what it does not affect or is responsible for.

From what you’re saying I take it he was already a patient at the VA, It’s next impossible to get into the VA without a service connected claim. Then while a patient they missed the cancer until it was too late. I here horror stories of people “falling through the cracks” a lot; which is a sad fact of many VA’s. I’m sorry for your loss and could never begin to analyze what happened there. My wife has a friend that the same thing happened to her husband. (Undiagnosed cancer until it was too late.) From what I understand they do lower the benefit somewhat when only one person is left but do not stop compensation completely. Assuming your father in law made a compensation claim for his illness to be initially admitted to the VA an Agent Orange claim “percentage” would have been added to the original claim. Your story is a very sad one indeed.

I was diagnosed with cancer in 05. My family doctor found the cancer; sent me to a specialist and was treated privately - not through the VA. Agent Orange is a very “symptom specific” claim (albeit liberal in requirements) but it seems liver cancer may not be one of them.

@dwLost

No worries. The VA is a very useful benefit and is certainly not off the table here. I haven't had the best of luck with them, but they HAVE improved and are a valuable asset to us.

It's still a raw wound, I guess. I'm sure ill I'll get back to the VA sooner or later : )

Anyhow, it IS important to get regular checkups and the VA IS great for that. Specialists and such, perhaps not, but they outsource most of that.

What do you call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his class in med school?

Captain! : )

FWIW: Veterans Disability Compensation claims have nothing to do with the VA Hospital. It will get you in to the hospital once you have an active claim but the compensation part is totally separate. And you don’t need to have a compensation claim to get into the VA Hospital but you still need to prove your issues are service related. And as long as your that far along you may be entitled to compensation.

A good place to start is your local Legion hall or VFW. Call you don’t need to join or anything just give them a call and the commander or secretary can put you in touch with someone willing to work with you locally. BTW you don’t make a disability compensation claim at the VA you have to do it on line now since the internet, here’s a link: How to Apply - Compensation

If a Compensation claim is turned around (from a “no” answer) there will be back pay, paid out from the original claim date. I’ve learned through the years “the squeaky wheel gets the grease” especially for a service connected illness. If you do get “NO” You can then contact a “FREE” Government Patient Advocate at: Patient Advocate - Veterans Health Administration

The VFW is the one organization where I ensure I renew my membership. It is a great organization.

I finally decided to join the VFW as a member at large this past November. I am still procrastinating with calling the local guys...but I will get around to it soon.

Wow this is a pretty quiet thread here.

It has it's ebb and flow. We can be a rowdy bunch from time to time. Welcome to the family!

I had joined the American Legion on line but found they put me in kind of like a Wisconsin member pool. Then a year later the neighbor and I were talking and he took me to the Legion hall he belonged to. We transferred my membership and been going ever since. One thing I did find out, like all clubs I've been in, there is always a need for volunteers to do the good work. Masonic lodge, VFW, scouting etc. They hook you with the promise of camaraderie and friendship and reel you in as a volunteer. Hey it's something to do on a thursday evening and there's beer afterwards. How cool is that!

I'm a new member to B&B and a former foxhole shaver. I don't miss shaving by feel with ice cold water and tube shaving cream that was so cold it was more like putty than shave cream. Had to warm it in my hands before it would even think of making a decent lather.

I started going to the VA in 69 with a service connected disability. Back then it was like going to a third world country for treatment. It has made light year advances. The major problem is Congress under funding the VA. Also, the medical, hospitals and clinics are run in each state by the state who answers to the VA in Washington. Used the ones in NY, MD and now FL. Excellent treatment and no problems getting in. By the way, I to shaved in cold water and no way will I do it again.

How do you guys feel about VA privatization? I'm not trying to start anything, but most people in my life don't really have an informed opinion.

I'm still on the fence about it. I see the pros and cons of each side, but can't seem to choose a side.

I would have to say that Im on the "Uninformed Masses" camp. Is there talk of taking the VA private?

I just discovered DE shaving, B&B, and this club. I never shaved with a DE deployed, but I have shaved numerous times out of a water can with a ****ty cartridge razor and no cream. USArmy 19D, Cavalry Scout.

Hello Gents!
I'm a long time lurker, first time poster and former ABE 3.

My very first shave was during a short stay at an all inclusive health club known as Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, taught by a very spirited and loud Cheif Boatswains Mate. After four years of shaving and contemplation aboard the USS John C Stennis; I'm still undecided, which feels smoother? My face? Or my DD-214?!

Howdy troop, welcome! I spent two years and a couple of months with 3/8 cav, as an FO. My MOS was 13 Foxtrot. I worked closely with a lot of scouts. Some real go-getters. Again, welcome.
HooAhh!

17 years in the forces shaved with nothing, cartridge razor and water...can't believe how I got to getting by until the first time I got to enjoy shaving properly...so can I claim the title?
