What's new

Forgive me for I have sinned

I was at wal-mart today to pick up a few things and I passed a display with the Schick Hydro 5 in a gift pack that included the razor, 4 extra cartridges and some shave gel for $10. I usually just walk past these and laugh and think they can't come close to my 1959 Fatboy and DE blade. Well I had a moment of temporary insanity and bought it. On the drive home I'm thinking to myself "what the hell am I doing? I know better".
I decided to try it and pull it out of the package and notice that it is feels like a plastic toy instead of a tool to remove unwanted facial hair. I apply shave secret oil to my face which is my favorite and then I swipe the 5 blade wonder across my cheek with the grain and it felt really smooth until I noticed it didn't remove any hair. I did this over a dozen times and it barely removed anything so I decided to go against the grain and the same thing. I used this piece of crap in every possible angle I could think of and even thought about standing on my head to see if that might work but no. I ended up pulling out the Fatboy to finish the job. I guess it's true what they say. If it ain't broke don't fix it and more isn't always better. I'll stick with my Fatboy and a single DE blade and will be sure to laugh when I walk past those displays.

Sure you didn't jam the cartridge on backwards?

No need to be upset. It's one thing to think today's plastic "razors" can't do better, and another to know they can't do better. Heck, for $10 I might even give it a try.
The refund idea wouldn't hurt either:biggrin1:

This is where I part ways with lots of folks on the forum.

A couple years ago, Gillette did their legendary stunt with me, and sent me a free five bladed wonder, unplugged model, complete with one installed cartridge. I got to use it a couple times, and truth be told, it performed perfectly, cleanly shaving my whiskers with no irritation at all. If refills weren't so damn expensive, and if it were a nice mechanical object to behold, I might still be using it.

For this brief but uncontrolled act of insanity your punishment shall be at least a copper contribution to B&B

I concur.

The cartridge razors do not perform badly per se. I have one of those new Gillettes because i got curious (as i always do when i see a new model) and truth to be told, it's a good razor. It shaves just as good as my futur does.

Now, the downside is that i would've to pay $20 or so for 6 cartridges. And that is where it's getting ridiculous. Other than that.....it's not a bad razor. But it's also nothing that looks good, nothing that makes me feel like i have something substantial. And that's part of the fun.

Same here...the price drove me away from carts and the aesthetics pulled me all the way over to the DE Way. I will admit the DE results are not as good, but the experience and the fact that skill can correct that make up for it.

I used a Hydro 3 a few times on my noggin and found that you really have to bear down on the handle in order to put some pressure on it to get it to cut. Never used it on my face.

I got the Hydro 3 free from Walgreens through a sale and a rebate, so it was worth it to try. I have to say, not a bad shave. It was as close a shave as any other I've had. The only downside being the gel stuff, I'm not a huge fan.
