What's new

For current or veteran military members.

I got into wet shaving after I was active duty. I am now currently in the reserves. In June we will be doing field exercises, and we still have to shave everyday. Does anyone have experience for wetshaving in the field? Can anyone give me tips? Is it worth it, or should I suck it up and use a cartridge and canned goo? thanks for the info.

I always just used my Atra and some goo. It is hard to shave out of a canteen cup or a kevlar helmet. But if you are in The South, like I am, menthol is a must. it keeps the burn down and the pores tight. Plus it gives a nice cooling efect even if the temp is in the mid to upper 80's when you wake up in the morning.

I was thinking of a shaving stick, a brush, and a de. but just might stick to the goo and a cartridge. I might bring the other stuff along so when i get back to the barracks, I can have a nice shower and a shave.

That is a superb idea. I use the goodnews in the field. but once I got back to the barracks, Katie bar the door! out comes the Aristocrat, AOS soap, and the Edwin Jagger.

You would not believe the amount of looks that I would get in the latrine! I guarantee that you could send a naked woman in there and they would not get as much attention.

Word to the wise, pack an extra razor. I bet somebody will want to try it.

I shave with a straight and I take it, a strop, and a tin of soap when I head to the field. I would rather shave with a straight or double edge razor in the field. In fact, that's one of the primary reasons that I thought about switching to wetshaving. In my experience the multi-blade cartridge razors always got clogged with shaved beard, the canned shaving cream/goo, and all the other dirt and sweat on my face that was near impossible to clean out while shaving with cold water and a canteen cup. The jammed razors always led to extremely uncomfortable shaves, not to mention not very good ones because the blades couldn't get as close to the skin. I'd go through a cartridge every two days or so and that got annoying and expensive, especially on longer field problems, like rotations to NTC, or deployments to places that don't have much of anything, at all.

A single razor can't get clogged and I've never had any problems of trying to find a razor when I start running low, an electric razor running out of a charge, or running out of canned shaving cream.

Now that I have lauded wetshaving and believe I have sufficiently qualified myself:blush: to respond let me get to the meat of your question

I shave one pass with the grain only. Everybody's dirty they just generally want to see if you're taking care of yourself and one of the best ways to tell is with a shave, unless they are extremely anal. I also shave before I bed down, no matter the time of day, unless I've been up a really long time. As Josh said pack an extra razor not only if someone wants to try it, but if something were to happen or someone needed your razor more than you do you're out of luck.:thumbdown If you're prepping with cold water let the lather sit for a little bit and then re-lather. If you have to shave with a mirror and don't have one a HMMWV mirror works, just turn it to face the front of the truck and have the rest of your stuff on the hood. Speaking of stuff I just take the bare minimum out to the field and the save the rest for when you come out of the field (depending on the length of the problem/deployment location) and can take a nice shower to wash the grime off of you.

Hope that helps and if you have any other questions please ask.

If i was you, i would look up a Tech and a stick of Arko. You can get away without using a brush when you are in the 'Bondu', but i'd take one for when you are in a more luxurious (yeah i know, but it is relative) setting.
