Following up DMT stones

Last week I pulled the trigger on the 6 inch anniversary DMT set from Woodcraft to get into honing at a reasonable cost. I was curious as to advice for a reasonable cost finishing stone. I do have a balsa block with what I believe is Chrome Oxide (Dico Premium Buffing Composite, Chrome from my local ACE) and think it will work, but other things I have read about the DMTs leads me to think that another option might be better.

Thanks in advance guys

Joel strongly advocates that setup. He uses it with great success. If you want something intermediary and cheap, then a Chinese 12K is your best bet. A yellow Coticule is also recommended but it's much more expensive. You can also strop on newspaper right before stropping on leather.

Ultimately, once a razor has been made sharp, the final stages are polishing. That removes scratches and makes the edge smoother. I suppose the human condition to want more plays a role in the amount of whetstones some people, I included, have. However, there isn't a need for more.

Which DMT are you finishing with? Sorry, i don't know enough about the anniversary set.

If the EE, then Crox or any finishing stone will theoritically work. I don't have any first hand experience though.

Cool!

Another question for the honing experts: Can one jump directly from setting a bevel on the 1200 to finishing on the 8000? Or should there be an intermediate step between the 1200 and 8000?

Although the 8000 is a big jump, the DMTs work fast enough that it's fine. I wouldn't recommend that jump with other stones though. Just get something to polish afterward: chromium oxide, Chinese 12K, or yellow Coticule, for example.

You *can* do that with any stone. But the problem with jumping too high is the unnecessary amount of time skipping a step takes. I've heard the DMT is agressive enough to do this, but from what I've read about experiences, its not recommended if you have a 4k stone. But it works.

Yes, I should have posed my question in a clearer manner, but I believe that you and Telly correctly interpreted what I meant and answered my question ... thanks!

Do the interrupted DMTs work the same as the continuous DMTs?

The set is 600, 1200 and 8k. At 50 bucks on clearance right now seemed like a heck of a deal. Glad to know I should be set for now.

I used them in tandem without a problem. I started with the interrupted #1200 to set the bevel and went to the continuous #8000. My next stone/pasted strop after that did the final polishing and took care of any scratches left over from the previous two stones.

I have a DTM 8K that I use to follow my King 1.2K. It works just fine! However, the Chinese 12k cuts much to slowly to follow up the diamond plate. I just replaced mine with a Shapton 16 and I must say the results are great!
