flaking

I shower at least once sometimes twice a day. But I get these soars that flake on my scalp, needless to say it is embarrassing when my boss points it out I have tried all the dandruff shampoos and nothing works any ideas

I would use something with coal tar in it, like Neutrogena T-Gel. If that has not worked/does not work, then I would talk with a hair care professional and/or a doctor about your options.

Before considering the medicated route, try Basking Soda

Get a palm full and rub it in with your favorite shampoo. Leave for 2 minutes (while you clean the rest of body). Wash and rinse

Try this for a week and see what happens.

Baking soda will balance the pH of your scalp...very effective

You say you've tried all the dandruff shampoos. Does that include Nizoral? That seems to work well, but you need to use it regularly for a while before you see results. Also, leave it on your scalp for a while before you rinse it off.

I agree. Nizoral is seriously good stuff. It is worth a serious try.

Where do they sell this stuff at. I will try the baking soda thing first and see if that works. Thanks for the help

Basking Soda is good for Soars.

On a serious note... I have a similar problem, with an extremely sensitive scalp. Try using Grandpa Wonder's Pine Tar soap as a shampoo bar. This is the best thing I have found.

While you are trying out the shampoos, also try this.

I assume you shampoo in the morning. Before you go to bed each night, rub a little Eucerin Aquaphor healing oitment on the flaky sores.

try Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo - or, better still, Sally Beauty Supply's knock-off: Generic Brand [sic] Tea Tree Shampoo.

Seriously.

...unless you already have tried it - and it didn't work.

A visit to a dermatologist might be in order.

Selson Blue medicated seems to be the only thing that has helped...

Also, if the sores get bad enough, go to the doctor. You might have sebhorreic dermatitis, which is like dandruff on steroids. It's caused by a fungus that feeds off of yeast, some people get it, some people don't and there is no cure.

I used to go through flare-ups where my scalp and skin would be clear, then out of the blue I would have a very scaly scalp, I mean my whole scalp, and my face would also have flakes, especially on both sides of my nose and my entire chin which i f-ing hate  (think fumanchu area). Using selson blue medicated (red top) and Neutrogena T-Sal has helped tremendously. Also, anyone else who does not know how to control the flare ups on your face where you shave, try shaving twice a day. I know that sounds retarded, but it seems that is the ONLY way I can control flare ups on my face.

If you do go to the doctor and you are diagnosed with sebhorreic dermatitis, ask to be prescribed Luxiq, and hope to god you have good insurance. Hope this info helps anyone!!

Just pick at it. Eventually you'll run out of scalp, and there won't be anything more to flake off!

On a more serious note, I feel for you, I've suffered from the flaky scalp problem my whole life, and it's a pain. Definitely check out Nizoral, it's some powerful stuff. It comes in a regular over-the-counter formulation, and a prescription strength version which is twice as concentrated as the OTC shampoo. It works well, but don't use it every day. Alternate it with a gentler shampoo or just rinse the hair out with warm water on the days in between.

If you have actual SORES on your scalp, you should see a dermatologist.

If you just have severe dandruff, then i agree with eyebright.

But if you have sores, you need to be seen. There is a variety of conditions that can cause sores and flakiness on the scalp, and the treatment may vary depending on the diagnosis.

Nizoral works wonders. Do a net search and throw a twenty down on a 2% concentration.

Nizoral is great stuff if the problem you have is seborrheic dermatitis.

HOWEVER, I have terrible seborrhea and suffered with bad dandruff for years, using various dandruff shampoos including Nizoral at least once a week to keep under any kind of control, but I recently solved my seborrhea by switching to a shampoo bar. I'm not the only person on this forum to report a similar finding. I can only conclude that in some cases the SLS and/or SLES in commercial shampoos contributes to, or, in fact, is the MAIN problem causing seborrhea.

I've been using shampoo bars since mid-June. I haven't had to use any dandruff shampoos at all since I switched from J R Liggetts to Mystic Water Soap shampoo bar, made by B&Bs own "eyebright." I can't tell you how many thousands of dollars I have spent on dandruff shampoos over the years. Now I think that, although they were temporarily helpful, they may have actually been CONTRIBUTING to the problem.

Try it for yourself. www.mysticwatersoaps.com.

I mentioned this on another thread but it seems appropriate to say here too -- vinegar can be great for dandruff. It stinks until it dries, but it really does clear out the flakes, and I think it helps neutralize the bacteria that comes with them. But it would sting like crazy on open sores. It sounds like what's going on is more than just dandruff. I agree that a trip to the dermatologist might be in order.

I have always noticed that head and shoulders aggravates my SD. I actually think it is the pyrithione zinc in it... .Because I used another brand shampoo that had the same PZ and it just aggravated it even more. Selson Blue seems to be helping me.
