What's new

First time wetshaving!

Yeah, I really should've read about how to actually shave with a DE. :lol1: I don't know if it's my technique or the blades. Probably a bit of both. I realized there is a golden angle, and I don't know that angle yet. I had a couple good swipes, but then I got a bit fouled up, and I think I pulled myself out of it. The brush I have (the boar's hair one that came with my kit) isn't exactly a lather factory, I think I had to use too much cream to get a good lather, it wasn't as thick as I was hoping. Again, first time ever trying this. But I got a good enough lather. It felt pretty good going on, except it didn't feel thick enough, and the brush was squashing a bit. Don't know if it's actually exfoliating the way I was doing it. Circular motions, or back and forth? Against the grain or with it? I really should've read how to actually do it. :001_tongu It's not as smooth actually as my venus divine (5 blades) gets it, but there are some parts that got nice and smooth, so I can tell I got the right combo of variables on those passes. I know my leg wasn't wet enough. I just stood at the sink and put a hot cloth on my leg for a minute, I know it'll be better in the shower after the skin has had time to soak up some water and the hairs are nice and soft. Gotta tell ya, I'm really scared to try shaving hard to reach places with this thing. I think I'll just start on up to the knee, then worry about the rest of my leg, then my underarms. There was a tiny bloodbath. Pictures:

I'm sure a few of our lady members will be able to offer better advice, but I would suggest going WTG first. Also, if you don't like your brush, you can get a great boar for around $20. Omegas are nice boars. What blade were you using?

Just the crappy Gillette stainless steel ones I got at rite aid. 10 bucks for 10 blades, rip.

Have you given your leg a good feel and determined the direction the hair grows? This is key because developing good technique while shaving WTG is the opening gambit here.

Yeah, I know which way everything grows. Never ever have shaved with the grain before, always against. I know sometimes it's great advice, but I don't want to shave my legs twice. Is that the proper way to shave with a DE? I only have a couple days growth on my legs, in the winter I let it go a couple weeks or more (my bf doesn't touch me anyway :lol1:). But of course, it grows slower and finer in the winter. Go figure.

These correct?

Gillette does make some top quality blades (the Gillette Seven O'Clocks, and the Astras), unfortunately these are not; the ones pictured above are generally regarded as being some of the worst on the market.

oof, that looks rough. coincidentally, I bought my wife a lady gillette 2 weeks ago -- found it at an antique store for $4. I'm trying to get her to use it so it's good to know the do's and don'ts of lady shaving. i'll probably help her along with the lathering and technique so she doesn't butcher her legs

I'm using the women's line from Art of Shaving. It was an impulse buy, I went in there for a gift for someone else. I will definitely be trying some different stuff, you guys talk about the brush acquisition disorder, I have an everything acquisition disorder. :lol1: I have 547 bottles of shampoo in my shower (ok, slight exaggeration). I knew those blades were probably crappy, but they were all I could find. I just wanted something, anything to start with, and I have an impatience problem. So I knew they weren't the best, but I was frustrated with trying to find stuff, that I just got them. I'm looking online now for some better ones. Question: How long will a single blade last? Do you use one side at a time? I noticed the sides have little numbers printed next to them, on both sides. Do you turn the blade over at some point and use the other side? I wouldn't think that would make a difference, a dull blade is a dull blade no matter what direction you use it in.

blade longevity varies from user to user -- it really depends on the frequency in which you shave. I generally use mine 3-4 times before changing it out. I don't think the numbers really mean anything if i'm not mistaken. although, I do catch myself flipping the blade over once in a while.

if you're looking for new blades check out West Coast Shaving, as mretzloff recommended. the sampler pack is a good bet and it's cheap.

It looks like a goat was slaughtered next to you. I'm sure your shaves will get better and better. I should note that I had a similar experience on my face when I tried Crystal blades when I was new. Good luck!

On average most blades will last between 3-5 shaves.

Do you use one side at a time?

Most of us switch what side we are using equally during the shave: for me, every time I rinse the razor in my sink I switch to the other side. It would be difficult to know side A from side B, so we just try to use both sides equally.

I noticed the sides have little numbers printed next to them, on both sides.

Those numbers mean nothing to us, as shavers. They are on there in order to help with quality control at the factory.

Flipping the blade over accomplishes nothing. Once a blade is dull, it's done. Flipping it would not reveal a sharper edge.

Just placed an order from West Coast shaving, I love sample packs. I got the 10 dollar choice package, so hopefully I'll get some good non-bloody use out of them. Here's the rest of the stuff I got, I was hoping for some out of the ordinary scents like lilac or violet, but they didn't have anything too extraordinary. I already have rose, or else I would've gotten that too.

Omega Professional Boar Shaving Brush, White Handle
Cremo Cream Shaving Cream
DE Blade Sampler Pack, Choice
Col Conk Styptic Pencil
Derby Moisturizing Super Lavender Shave Cream
Provence Sante Green Tea Shaving Cream

Thanks for all the info and support guys! I'll keep my experiences posted. :001_smile

I would advise to go in shorter sweeps, kind of like up and down striking motion. This gives a lot of control imo.
