What's new

First time on Super Speed!

Okay, so I'm not actually ON speed, but I just tried out my very first Gillette Super Speed this morning. It's a 40's-style, and I popped in a brand new Feather blade to go with the last of my Simpsons Luxury cream sample. Talk about a sweet shave! It's a little more aggressive than my EJ DE89, but not nearly as aggressive as my Merkur 37G slant. So, I'd rate it as a moderately-aggressive razor. The shave was smooth, with no major nicks or weepers. The neck area I left more in a SAS condition, but the rest of my face was pretty easy to get to BBS. The weight is nice, and it's a bit more head-heavy. No clogging, skipping, or razor burn. Just a nice overall shave.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my thoughts on this razor. After I use up this blade, I'll move on to trying out the Flare Tip I picked up, too. I suspect the results will be similar.

I also can't wait to try these razors out with some new creams I have, or that are on the way. I just opened up some T&H 1805, as well as some KMF Mint. So far, I like both of them a lot! I also have some Dreadnought on the way. Man, these ADs need to slow down a bit...

sounds like a good shave. I gave my son one of my SS's and its now his daily shaver. The Superspeeds are probably the best all around shaver for 90% of the general population.

Yup, I like my Super Speed too. I'd like to get it replated in a nice dark black nickel though give it that man's look. Though, I hear black nickel isn't as durable as something like rhodium.

I've never used the 40's style; but one of the very few perfect shaves I've ever had was with a SuperSpeed that I bought for a friend, to convert him to wet shaving. Flare-tip, I think it was 1964 but I can't remember for sure. I used it once.... couldn't believe how good it was. I'm also not sure about what blade I used, but I think it was an Astra SP.

Color me intrigued. I've tried the Black Handle and Flare Tip and found both to be far too mild. I'll have to add a 40s SS to my list. All the more based on Krona's recommendation.

I recently used my 40's-stlye SS for the first time, too.

Mild shave and incredibly close shave with a 7 o'clock black and a new stick of La Toja.

When I used it a second time, though, with a new stick of Palmolive, there was a bit of clogging which was rather annoying.

Anybody else experience clogging in TTO razors?

Give it a good rinse between each pass and make sure your lather is well hydrated.

A 40's style ('52) SS is my winter razor as I like a milder razor and blade (Red IP) during the colder months. I just switched back to the SS yesterday after using a Merkur HD for the past 7 months and it instantly made me realize why it's been a favorite since I started wetshaving.

It's my understanding that the 40's-style SS is slightly more aggressive than a Flare Tip. But that's not saying a lot. I would guess the 40's-style is less aggressive than a Red Tip. So, it's mild-to-moderately aggressive, I suppose. It's certainly more aggressive than my EJ DE89. Only way to find out is to try one.

It's funny - when I consider the aggressiveness of my flare tip SS and 1940s SS to my Aristocrat, they are both so much milder than the Aristo as to make comparison of aggressiveness between the two SS very difficult if not impossible for me. I did actually do a half face trial with the two SS, in the name of science, of course. I was more "familiar" with the flare at the time but ultimately not much diff at all to me. Maybe time for some more experiments.

I love my 40's SS, but I really don't like my 1970 black handle SS. The 40's version has a much better balance and weight to it, as well as being more aggressive/effective with way less effort (I think it's the added weight, really). I only keep the 1970 since it's one of my birth year razors. I just don't keep it in the rotation.

There's something to be said for a manly, nickel-plated Super Speed in your hand. I use a TV Special when I'm trying for a BBS. No, I don't try for that on work days.
