First Super Speed shave

I recently picked up a couple of Super Speeds off the BST and took them for a spin... I was amazed how different the shave was compared to my HD. I've used only Merkur razors since I've started with the DE, which was about 5 months ago.

The SuperSpeed took a 4th pass to get my ideal shave whereas the HD takes 3... BUT the Super Speed gave me less irritation and what I thought was a closer shave. Are Super Speeds less aggressive than the fixed Merkur non-slant heads?

I wonder how the SS would do with a Feather!?

My only experience comes from a later model SS (black plastic handle.) I definitely find it to be much less aggressive than my HD. Not that that's a bad thing, just different.

I suppose you would be looking for a red tip SS if you want to kick it up a notch.

It took me a long time to figure out my superspeeds. Took several tries to get the angle and blade right. At first with it, I could only make it work with Williams, and this is after 4 years with a Merkur.

I think Gillette pick 'Super Speed' as a name since it's quick and easy! Those razors are quite amazing. Easy to work with, mild and efficient. A red tip would be a bit more agressive or the late '40 SS...

Having shaved with a Fat Boy, Super Adjustable, Slim and a 50s style SS, I just love my '40s Super Speeds. I get a great shave with two passes and some touch-up. So far, I think the Super Thin Gillette blade does a better job than the Red IP, but I've only used the RIP once. Still waiting for my Feathers to get here. But this is my razor of choice. I'm just still hunting for my blade of choice to go with it.

ok here is my opinion, since I have a few different razors and some spare time, I have compared all of them loaded with the same razor - Red Israeli Personna;

I think the Merkur HD and the 40' SS are about the same in regards to aggressiveness.
The 50' SS is milder but the Red Tip is more aggressive.
The adjustables are very versatile and the Tech is a great razor for fast shaves.
Now here is my take; The Tech and the Slim dialed to 4-5 gave me the best shaves so far, then the 40',50' SS and the Merkur HD(all three are in same place), then the Fatboy Dialed to 3-4 and then the Red Tip.
My biggest surprise is the BE Tech, it's a nice razor with a great grip that gave me BBS in 2 passes !!! The HD gives me the same results in 3 passes and both SS in 4 trips... The Slim and the Fatboy give BBS in 3 passes.
My biggest disappointment is the Red Tip, I was hoping to get close shaves with less irritation but instead, all I got is bad irritation and not so close shave.
Ohh my apologies, I think I am a little off topic :blushing:

Which types of Superspeeds did you get? They aren't all created equal. My experience is that the red tip variant is quite a bit more aggressive than the Merkur HD (I own one of both), and also that the red tip works much better on my face.

Try different kinds and see what's best for you, lots of cheap Superspeeds available at the BST. Which reminds me that I still have a few variants left to buy... :tongue_sm

I think the red tip and the HD is on par in aggressiveness - I like both of them very much. My '40 SS is definitely milder and I can only obtain a bbs if it put a Feather in it. BTW this is a very fine combo.
