IMO, it does not matter, as long as it is shave ready. Pick what looks nice to you. Generally 5/8 full hollow round point are good beginner razors.

You might look at the BST, or one of the hobbiest we have here. Another option is whippeddog.com.

so i want to buy my 1st straight razor, the only question is what to get,
5/8?
6/8?
Feather?

If you want a true straight, 5/8 or 6/8 is the ideal size. Get one that is shave ready and in good shape. Of course you will need a strop and sharpening stones to maintain the blade. There are a lot of useful YouTube videos that can demonstrate how all of this is done.

A Feather uses a special blade they manufacture, so you can skip blade maintenance altogether. According to what I've read at this site, people who use them love this razor.

I've heard Feathers are way too sharp, and after a while, they thin your cheeks so much that a simple scrape will draw blood.
Of course, I've also heard they are great.

IMO a good starter razor would be 5/8 to 6/8 round tip shave ready(not factory edge). A spike tip can cut you very easily when you are first learning. Ive never used a feather shavette but I have used several shavettes and they are very good BUT the real straight is much smoother and forgiving.

Get a razor and a poor man's strop kit. That's all you need in order to get started with a straight. Once you've learned the basic techniques, you'll know what you want to try next.

You can't go wrong with this!

Yes, sight unseen razors from Whipped Dog are good. They are not new and therefore not cosmetically beautiful, but they functional and honed to shave readiness. The poor man's strop kit is also a great deal, because a) you absolutely need a strop and b) you will nick it while learning, so no need for a top of the line strop right off the bat. If you end up not liking straight razor shaving you won't be out too much money going with Whipped Dog, plus Larry is very helpful.

If a "used" razor is not your thing then I would look at the straights available from B&B supporting vendors or straight razor designs. Just make sure you get a razor that is shave ready (i.e. taken out of the factory package and honed) and also get a strop.
