First straight shave, questions

i have a relatively course beard, and i used the 6/8 full hollow ground razor from ruprazors. im having trouble distinguishing between feedback and tugging. it seemed like i really needed to force the razor through the whiskers in order to cut. i did 1 pass wtg on my entire face with the straight, then did 1 pass XTG and 1 ATG on my cheeks with a 34C. i have zero irritation on my entire face. the neck was always a problem area, and this is one of the greatest that area has ever looked after a shave. the true test is whether or not regrowth presents a problem. im wondering how to tell the difference between tugging on whiskers and simply feedback?

Tugging vs feedback is pretty much like a DE. If the straight remove some hairs and doesn't irritate you, then it's all right.

You will know when it's pulling. As you are starting, don't worry too much about it. Do the passes only if you are confident and everything will get better with time.

i think this is probably true. when i used my right hand on the left side of my face i was able to get a better more shallow angle, and it sounded different and seemed to tug less. maybe i need to use a more shallow angle all over for less tugging. i will try that next time.

Feedback? What feedback? You mean the sound of the razor as it whacks through your whiskers? Or the feel of the razor as it effortlessly chops through a forest of hair?

In short, you shouldn't feel tugging. But thats probably because your technique is in its beginning stages right now.

its not the feeling of whiskers being tugged, its the feeling of the razor encountering resistance in its path throughout the cutting motion.

So... everything's all good? :biggrin1:

Really, its just natural. You have thick hair, its going to be a little tougher for the razor to chop all the way through it. If you had finer hair, you probably won't feel a thing. But finer hair is probably 2x thinner.

Before deciding on the next razor, get a few more shaves and get more used to the process. Then just try a different grind when you are comfortable with the process.

I like my W&B 1/4 grind, but get better shaves from my more hollow blades. I guess I need to find another blade that has a shape similar to my W&B (smiling) but is a little more hollow ground... :)

I found that making the angle more shallow really helped with tugging. The first few shaves I thought I was at around 30 degrees but was getting a lot of tugging. I paid more attention and got the spine closer to my face and the blade started slicing through the whiskers much more easily.
