First Straight Razor shave

I just received my first straight from Ambrose. It was what I expected. Very prompt shipping. A great transaction Ambrose.

I could hardly wait to try it out. I drank a few beers to steady my hand and went at it. I actually had the thought that I would take right to it. I didn't experience any learning curve on a safety razor. Needless to say, I was sorely mistaken.

I will be the first to admit that impatience got the better of me and my prep sucked. Consisted of a couple of splashes of hit water, about 10 seconds under a hot, wet towel and then lathered up.

I made up a pretty wet Tabac lather and spread it on. I grabbed my new straight and went to work. I played with several angles and had the most success with a very shallow (maybe 5-10 degrees). When I say success, it's jsut figurative. I was really worried about shaving with my non-dominant hand and had pretty much made up my mind to not try that for a while. Of course, my dominant hand was doing so hot, so I switched. Strangely, the stroke was much smoother with my left hand for some reason.

After 3 passes (2 wtg and 1 xtg), I called it quits for this session. I didn't want to risk the burn. When I rub my face, it feels like I could really use a shave. There is one surprisingly smooth spot under my jaw. I recall a spectacular non-dominant hand stroke in that area. I'll have to try to remember how I did it. The good news is that I didn't cut myself. Of course, I didn't cut many whiskers either.

I learned that this is harder than it looks (surprise). I also believe I may have the wrong razor. THis is merely an observation based on my current level of comfort. I feel like I would be more comfortable with a round point. I'll be on the lookout.

Next shave, in the morning after a long hot shower. Wish me luck.

You didn't cut yourself, so you should consider it a successful first shave. A shallow angle is the right idea. Using the non-dominant hand is also a good approach. One thing you didn't mention is stretching. Stretching is more important than using the non-dominant hand.

Stretching, did that. Sorry for not mentioning it. It was something I compensated for in safety razor shaving with mere face contortions.

I surely could have been more aggressive. Of course, I would've bled more in all probability.

Upon further reflection, a lot of my problem was probably hesitancy with my dominant hand. Trying to figure out pressure and angles. The biggest culprit, I'm sure, was my prep and stubborn beard.

i just ordered a round tip Henckles from ruprazor.com to satisfy my curiosity. Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated. I think I'll try a Proraso shave in the AM. I seem to be more prone to have wetter lather with cremes. And, i love the menthol feel.

p.s. Wet Shaver for 10 years, DE shaver for 1 year, Razor info: Montgomery and Crawford 5/8 half hollow with square tip. Tabac lather with DR Harris Sandalwood A/S.

That's a great start! Any pictures?

You are a braver man than I.

The first shave IS brave. This one was rather foolish.

second shave, still a little weak on prep. Wetter lather courtesy of proraso, hand stopped blade. I'm now at 1 1/2 day or less normal growth post shave. it's smoother, but not there yet. some weepers that closed nicely with nohing more than cold water. masters bay rum a/s. i can do this, just need some more reps.

+1 on Ambrose

Great stuff! Keep at it and it will get better!

Ambrose, I don't have my strop yet. I wanted a TM but I need something sooner since he is on vacation. I ordered a Filly from ruprazor.com. It just hasnt arrived. I felt like it needed something. Who knows.

Still not quite getting the results I was expecting. I'll be the first to admit that I probably expected too much. I still give it a shot everyday.

I do believe the square point was the wrong choice for me. My facial contours seem to be at odds with this tip at my current experience level. I just received a nice Friodur 7/8 round point that I am going to give a go. In trying to figure out what's going wrong, I've come up with the following ideas:

1. Razor wasn't exactly "shave ready". I've pretty much discounted this as Ambrose seems to have a good reputation. I must have damaged the edge somehow prior to the shave.

2. I am taking the "no pressure" thing too literally. It seems as though I've read on here somewhere to use a similar pressure as I do with a DE. That's easier said than done, but I'll give it a shot.

3. I am not sure handed enough yet to feel comfortable.

I took advice regarding ordering a 5/8 as my first straight and I'm not sure that was right for me. When I first saw it, it wasn't entirely impressive. It also felt a little lighter than what I thought I wanted. I sometimes experience slight tremors with fine motor skills. That added to the apprehension of trying this for the first time didn't help. It seems to be more of a problem with the lighter razor. That and I'm sure I'm gripping the thing way too hard.

The 7/8 Friodur seems to be what I was expecting. It has a good heft. I hope that'll help with the sure handedness and pressure theory. The round point should help with the comfort department as well. I'll have to let you know how the next shave works out as it will be my first with the Friodur. Thanks to all for your advice and encouragement. I'll keep trying til I get it.

SR shaving requires confidence more than anything. Short confident strokes. Then you can move to long confident strokes. But either case, the confidence is the key. I think the difference between those who are able to smoothly make the transition and those who struggle for a long time is confidence. The ones who are able to just get it, have confidence in their abilities and/or are simply not afraid of the straight razor. After all, it'll only nick you. You won't die from it unless you try to kill yourself.

Anyway, if you haven't read the "sharp steel & you" link in my sig, give it a read and maybe it'll help.

I think confidence is a huge factor. I had a pretty good experience with the 7/8 Friodur this morning. The razor seemed more comfortable to me. I'm going to see if I can get this a little more dialed in and give the 5/8 a go again.

p.s. thanks for the PM Ambrose.

For some reason, when you try a new direction for a pass, it doesn't feel right. Try the same the next day and it's much better... I found the learning curve to be slower and longer but that's all right.

If you still have a "real" barber in the neighborhood see if he can strop your razor for you. This will at least give you an idea of how your SE should or could feel.

UPDATE:

Tonight was my 9th SR shave. I did a couple with the 5/8 in my signature before ordering the Henckels. I have had way more confidence in it. It just feels better to me.

Anyway, got a DFS comparable to my DE. Better in some places (BBS). One bloody spot from a bump I had. Cleared right up with a styptic. I did have a very good, confident stropping to start out. Face lathered AOS creme as a change of pace. I'm waiting on my Oglalla Bay Rum Lime and Peppercorns to try.

The Henckels seems to really keep a good edge. I have 6 shaves on it and don't see it falling off. I stop with a filly and hit the paste side about every two shaves for 4 or 5 passes. I still want to try a Tony Miller. I still haven't been able to nick it. I'll keep trying :tongue_sm.
