First Shavette

There is a thread with responses as recent as today, I think it is posted under Artist Club blades. The ones that take those blades are what you want.

I went directly from carts to traditional straight razors. A few months later I got my first shavette.

I quickly learnt that a shavette is much less forgiving than a traditional SR. Don't get me wrong, shavettes can be enjoyable to shave with. It is just that they need to be used with more finesse than a traditional SR.

A decent starter traditional SR will set you back about USD 50 to 100. That may be beyond your budget. If interested, read here:

I consider 1, 3, 4 pretty much interchangeable as having a similar design. Same for style 2 or 5, though I have never used that style and cannot comment on whether its blade loading mechanism is better or not, though it does look easier to load.

For DE shavettes I prefer the Focus Slim Al over the ones linked, as the blade corners are not exposed, and it provides a good shave. But it does cost over twice as much. Another relatively inexpensive option which is also better IMO would be this style:
If you look carefully you will find them in different colors and with a kamisori handle. This style is available at other sites, I just listed the first place I remembered seeing them. The razor head is more wedged shape and I think you will find this style easier to learn on than those flat faced razors like 1/3/4.

And even better option are the shavettes which use Feather Artist Club blades. The AC blades are longer so there is much less chance that a blade corner will ever poke you in the face. The blades are more expensive but last longer than a DE blade for most people.

I am trying to not spend a lot of money but I don't want something where I can cut myself.

Mission impossible.
Where’s that Cruise character that apparently can solve similarly impossible tasks?

If you meant that seriously, you might want to stick to cartridge razors.

And as much as I like the extremely capable Feather Artist Club razors, these are about the last ones someone with your mission would want to try. They are neither cheap nor very forgiving.

Many beginners started with Dovo Shavettes that (like all shavette type razors) should not be mistaken as straight razors on training wheels, but if all you want is a shavette type razor, Dovo and Parker models seem to fit that role for many shavers.

I concur wholeheartedly rbscebu. Those first entering the arena of Straight Razor Shaving have been stymied by first trying the shavette before the SR.

My first great open blade shave was with a shavette, lol. ...just dull the corner points of the half de blade on the tile grout of your shower, learn to palm strop, and you'll be fine - light pressure. I have a fairly large collection of shavettes, and honestly, they just hold the blade. Some speak to your heart more than others, but an el cheapo will work just fine. You'll end up with a collection, anyway, so don't sweat picking just the right one. Enjoy the wonderful journey that you're on. 👍🌞

I concur…..Don’t put the destination before the journey!!’😊👍

I first tried a Parker SRX but then on a trip, I visited Maggard Razors and held an Irving Barber Company shavette which I liked the feel better. Though the IBC was more expensive, it allowed me to use half DE blades, injector blades, or Artist Club blades. I like the Artist Club style blades the best (Kai Captain Titan Mild specifically) since they were thicker and more forgiving than half DE blades. I did not like injector blades in the IBC but I do like them in injector razors (like the Parker adjustable injector razor). From then I moved on to a CJB and other AC style barber razors.

I use the Parker, along with a Weishi butterfly DE razor (for under my neck after the first pass), both with Derby blades and Ogallala soap. Love them all, but you will cut yourself. I'm old and fat, so I use the DE to avoid the problems inherent with a Shavette and loose skin on the neck.

If you can, get a reasonably priced straight razor instead of a Shavette, they are more tolerant.
