What's new

First shave.

Well I did it! Finaly talked my wife into letting me get a DE razor, and I got the Edwin Jagger DE89. I think it is a beautiful razor and I was so excited to use it this morning. I did a whole three passes, and now all I have is one word to describe my shave... FIRE!!!! My face is burning! After I got done with shaving I rubbed an alumn block all over my face and man did it set everything on fire. I also cut up my neck pretty bad. I know that it will take practice, but man this hurts...

What blade did you use? I had a bit of a bad shave first time out with the same razor and a derby blade. It will get a lot easier. My guess would be that you may have used a little too much pressure as you would with a cart/disposable. Give your face a couple of days rest and have another go but use a light touch and let the razor do the work. Good luck.

Welcome aboard. I'm sure you've read enough other things on here so you knew there is a learning curve going from carts to DE's, all anyone can tell you is that yes, it will get better and easier as you go. Like everyone says, don't use any pressure on the blade. Don't be tempted to try to hit an area again unless you relather it first. Use small shorter strokes. Finally, don't try to chase the BBS shave. Go with comfort and SAS, the closer and closer shaves will follow in time. All that being said, yes, the blade itself can make the difference, so you'll want to try out some other blades that are out there. Good luck, and keep us posted.

It does indeed take practice and patience when first starting out. I think the hardest thing for me was learning to get the angle of the blade just right. Just keep trying and you'll soon learn to love DE shaving!

Yes, I was probably aplying too much pressure. I was used a Derby blade. I think it will just take practice and an improved technique to get it. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Get yourself a sampler pack of blades. While a few people here have luck with the Derbys, they do not get a lot of love over all from the general populace on the forums. Astra SP's, Gillette 7o'clocks, Personnas... they seem to be a few different blades that I see very few say they hate, so generally regarded as at least serviceable if not completely great.

Welcome!
I agree with the others.
It will take time and practice. It seems the hardest habit to change from carts to DE is the pressure.
Ask questions, we'll do our best to answer.

One pass WTG for first three days. After three days, add one XTG pass. After two weeks of WTG followed by XTG, add the ATG pass: meditate a moment, get a good slick lather on there, and very carefully approach the ATG pass.

Also of note: shaving is not just the passes. It is the prep and the lathering, too.

Yep - agree, too much pressure. Also making multiple passes over same spot trying to get a BBS will cause mass irritation. Its a learning curve so I would suggest just doing a WTG and an XTG and call it good. Just go for a DFS to start. As your face dries and the hairs shrink you will be suprised and how clean the shave is. I found that when my face is still wet I feel a little stubble but once dry it seems to dissapear.
Also, what kind of prep did you do and what shaving cream/soap did you use? It may have been a reaction to something also.

Im sure you will here this over and over but technique is key any good shave but quality soaps, brushes, and blades add on to it.

I really want to thank all of you for your input and suggestions. I am waiting till my face re-cooperates, then will try again with one pass.

Looking forward to the progress report.

I've been DE shaving since late July of this year... today was the first day EVER I put on an aftershave splash and did not have one bit of sting, but still have a pretty close to BBS shave. In late August I was pretty convinced I'd just have to settle for DFS and no visible irritation, just some sting and stubble, which is still better than bumps, redness, and ingrowns. If I can get to a not sting BBS, anyone can. lol

Remember very good prep and no pressure. You may want to practice your angle and do less passes until you get the angle right. Good luck.
