First shave with: Van Der Hagen Deluxe Soap "Unscented"

Won this soap in a PIF (thanks Jeff!) and thought I'd give it a try this morning as I knew very little about the soap.

I promptly plopped it into one of the many tin cans I got from Stirling soap (as you can see the puck is a bit on the smaller side, at least diameter-wise.
Tools used was: generic badger brush, EJ DE89L w/a Voskhod blade and a $1.50 bowl from the local Daiso store.
(The bar of soap is a Stirling "Naked" unscented soap that has now become my daily face wash soap).

It started out great. Within 10 seconds I had lather filling the tin can and after working it some more it got to be rich and very slick I thought.

Applied it to my face and started face lathering.
My first reaction was that it did not feel as 'rich, slick and protective' as the feelings I get from using Mystic Water, Stirling - or even Arko. It felt 'thinner' in lack of a better word. I worked the soap some more. Tried more product on one side of the face, more water on the other but the result was pretty much the same.

Started shaving and it was actually a very smooth shave. I enjoyed it a lot.
I did notice that the lather started to almost dissipate on the other side of the face as I was shaving one side.
The lather didn't have a long staying-power it seemed. Maybe I had used too much water on that side, not sure.

Bottom line:
Well performing soap that gave a nice feeling, smooth and close shave.
Some concerns about the staying-power of the lather but am willing to put that down to my technique and maybe not getting the water-product ratio correct.
Not a bad soap.

I'll try it again in a few shaves time and see how it works out then and if the same lather issue comes back.

When I first started I got the VDH Deluxe Kit.

I didn't know anything.

I wasn't too impressed, so I ordered some Stirling, and spent some time learning to lather it.

A couple or three days I ago i dug out the old puck of VDH and was shocked how much better it was than the first time I tried it. :)

This reminds me of a Mark Twain quote:
“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”

That looks like some great lather from Van der Hagen. I've got a puck that's been sitting around that I've yet to try.
