First shave with Red Pack Personna

Last night was my first shave with a Red pack Personna. I tried it out in my EJ DE89. I can see how these would not be aggressive enough for some people, as it was definitely a mild shave, but that's what I was looking for. The shave overall did not seem quite as close as what I have been getting with Astras, but with less irritation, and I didn't have to be quite as meticulous. I can definitely see myself buying a box of these blades in the near future.

I've also found that they're not as sharp as Astras, but yield a smoother shave. I like Astras, though, and they are in my rotation.

I love Red Personnas...they're my primary blade. I find they are aggressive enough to give me a close shave with hardly any nicks and zero irritation.

Also they are relatively cheap and last me at least 4 shaves which is good.

Personna Reds are my standard blade. They're smoother than anything else I've tried, they're sharp enough for me and they last me a full week of 3 pass shaves before they need replacing. I found Personna Labs to be identical but YMMV.

The Reds are my favorite blade so far. I have use Merkur Supers, Astra SPs, Crystals, Wilkies, and Derbys.

they are a bit of a surprise, I remember the first time I tried them and couldn't believe how well they actually shave, so smooth and sharp, I would even give them an edge over the personna Labs... too bad i bought 100 labs instead of 100 IP's.......

FractionJack, it's your razor that is giving you an overly mild shave, not the blade. The EJ De89 is one the mildest available and I found it disappointing the more I used it in comparison to my Progress.
Britewhiteram, I feel the same way about purchasing 100 labs instead of the Reds... should've gone with the reds. Now I have 98 labs on the wall just sitting there acting less smooth..

DE89 is Progress set to about 2 or 2.5.
I can't explain it, but I both feel this razor (DE89) is very mild, and getting a strange irritation after every shave.
Red IP is my favorite blade. Smooth as butter. Even after using SI for the last few shaves getting back to this blade is a joy.

I would say it's both. I compared the DE89 with an Astra SP to the same razor with the red pack personna. I found the latter to be milder.

"Mild" and "Agressive" are highly subjective descriptions. I don't find the DE89 or R89 to be nearly the mildest razor available. Compared to a Gillette Tech, its definitely not mild. A Feather Stainless razor is much more mild. I even find the Pils to be a little milder than the DE89, as well as most solid-bar Merkurs. Personally, I think of the DE89 as about the middle of the "mild-aggressive" field along with Tradere SB. The DE89 responds well to blade changes, where the Feather and Gillette Tech are both very mild shavers no matter what blade you load. DE89 and Tradere SB are both very smooth, and I think that feels milder sometimes than it actually is, which I think is a good thing. Might be why the "mild/aggressive" descriptions of these two razors seem to be all over the place.
For me, a DE89 with Personna Reds is a much milder shave than with Astra's or Polsilvers. Its one of those razors that lets the blade make a difference. I have a wiry beard and sensitive skin, so its likely that I'm just more sensitive to small changes than most.

Funny, I just used my first Red this week too. About the same results, mild shave, not so close. But that works as an every day shave for me. I'm putting it in the rotation. SuperMax Plat+, Astra, Crystals, Reds.

Boy am i glad i just read this post,i just bought me 200 of the red's,i bought a pack of 10 from the local supermarket after reading they were the same as the lab's,ive had 2 cracking shave's from the blade up to now, useing a Merkur 34c,i allso have the 38c,which i will be trying them in at the weekend.
was after trying the lab' and med's.look's like i dont need to,i do prefer them over the astra's,derby's and a couple of other blade's i have tried, just waiting for my new toy,s to arive from over there in the USA,courtesy of Greg(cosmicdoom) then i get to try em in a fatboy,tv special, and an adjustable ,where the hell is the postman

Hmmmm better than SI's you say, maybe have to try these reds, cause nothing
for me has come close to an SI for smoothness.
Fraction, you try your SI's yet?

I didn't say they were better, just that they are very convenient. They are not as sharp as SI at all, but they are so smooth you feel you can't hurt yourself and can make more passes or whatever.

The Red Personnas are now my fovorite blade. I find them as smooth/sharp as Shark Super chrome but the Personnas last longer (I can actually get 5 shaves with little loss in smoothness). I use them in a Fat/Slim set to 5.

i had my first experience with these today. i felt that they were not as sharp as i would have liked, but at the same time they gave me a nick and weeper free 2 pass shave. my first impression was EeeK!! as there was some slight tugging, then the second pass ATG was a lot smoother. and as i said no nicks or weepers. i'm going to have to run these a second time before i make the decision to add them to my blade rotation but it may be a while as i only had 1 to use.
