First Shave With Boxed Large Fellow

Hello Gents,

Over Thanksgiving weekend, I picked up a few items in the wild, one being a 1920 Gillette Large Fellow in wooden box. It took me a while to get around to cleaning it up, but was finally able to get to it. Today I decided to try the fellow out. I loaded up a Personna Med Prep, whipped up some COB cream w/ AOS pure badger brush, and proceeded to give myself a BBS shave. I finished all off with a gracious amount of Veg, I mean dripping.

All in all, I think that I am going to repeat tomorrow, except I finished off the last of my Veg.:scared:

What am I to do?

Anyone else used a large fellow and had a similar experience?

Here she is! The box needs a little clean up and if anyone has any recommendation for wax, polish, and/or the like I would appreciate it.

That is quite a jewel you found

As far as shaving without the VEG.... NO WAY.. grow a beard until your next shipment of the VEG arrives.

Wonderful razor! One of my favorites. You might want to use a very light citrus based oil polish for your box and maybe some Q-tips to get the corners.

Thank you, I will try that. Do you think a hardwood oil would be an option as well? I have lemon oil, but I also have rosewood, ebony, and walnut wood oils to use on the fretboards of my guitars.

Lemon oil works best because you don't want to oversaturate the wood on the box and you want it to have a "fresh" look rather than a glossy finish.

very nice set! Are you sure about the date? Your Big Fellow is a New Improved with the flat base plate. I thought the New Improved comes 1921. What´s your serial number?

I've never heard it called a large fellow.

"OMG" I've heard that.

Usually it's a Big Fellow. Later, they were Big Boy- which confuses me. Like the Benjamin Button effect?

From now on I'm calling mine the Enormous Lad.

Ooops, I'm still getting their names down. Big Fellow is nice, I think that I felt as though Large Fellow had a nice ring to it. As far as the date, I will need to get back to you on the serial, my little one is sleeping in the room next to my shave den and my floors are impressively loud with squeaks. I was going by the date engraved on the barrel, Jan 20, 1920. I think:001_unsur.

I like Enormous Lad!

Maybe, Hefty Sir.

Ok, I had a chance to look up the serial. It looks like it my be a 1926, the # is 718828A. Any thoughts? The barrel is engraved, Jan 13, 1920.

Thank you Alex. I want to say that I have seen many of your posts to others in the forum, and you always go above and beyond. Thank you again for the great information. I am still enjoying the shave and am thinking of using it for a week and then putting it away for special occasions.

Next, I think that I am going to try the Shell Pocket Edition that I got in the same lot as I got this Big Fellow. I am sure to have questions about it as well, because I am not sure if the box and razor go together, and I hope that they did not make the flower engraved box in a gun metal version because I have taken the foil/baking-soda and MAAS to it and the "tarnish" started coming off but it also looks as though it my be brassing. Anyway, that is for a later thread.
