First shave with Auto strop

I used the auto-strop for the first time this morning and to be honest it was a closer shave than the Gillette K2 I picked up recently. Ive heard people say how an open comb was overly aggressive, they don't trust them and all sorts of things. After the first stroke I was really comfortable with it. The shave it gave me was closer with just two passes compared to four with the Gillette which is set to 4. Maybe I just need to experiment with different blades and the adjustment on the K2 but damn that Auto-strop is a close shave. I just want to thank the guys who recommended it to me.

Welcome to the Auto Strop admiration society. It is my go-to razor 4-5 days per week.

While your in an exploratory mood, also give the other single edge razors a try (Gem, Ever-Ready, etc.). You'll get great shaves with those as well, and the various models have a wide ranges of characteristics (aggression, handle design, etc.) to make just about everyone happy.

That being said, I own just about all of them and Auto Strops are at the to of the heap for me.

Thanks Mr Flay, I think Im going to give some of the others a shot and see if theyre as good as the auto-strop.

Most of them are good, you should give it a try - and they're pretty cheap for some reason.
The closest one to the Valet is the Gem shovelhead, imo, just as agressive. And, with the exception of Auto strop (i'm talking about Gem, Star, Ever-ready), you don't have to de-spine the blades and pop the tabs, they use regular SE blade.
If you like them, buy blades from Connaught shaving, i had some bad experience with Ted Pella's blades... the price is pretty competitive...
