I picked up a 1961 Fat Boy Adjustable last week. It was $4.75 at a local Antique mall. It did not look too bad. The operation on it was smooth. Did a cleanup using the Scrubbing Bubbles, and metal polish, and it actually cleaned up OK. Think it looks a little better in person probably due to the flash.
Anyway, I got around to trying it out today. I am fairly new to DE shaving. I just and have been using a Parker 91R for a couple of weeks now. I loaded a Shark, set the Fat Boy on 3, which I read on another post. Clearances looked good and even on both sides with no visible defects on the razor. So I gave it a go.
Other than a nick on a freckle on my neck, I had no problems. I used Bigelow Shave Cream and did a three pass than, a little atg on the neck. I dialed it down a bit and did a little buffing and j hooking at a couple of trouble spots on my neck. The results were probably a little better than with the Parker. Though I think the blade buffing helped a lot, and I had not done that with the Parker yet. There is a little more irritation on the trouble spots, but nothing that bad. Followed it up with Witch Hazel and Aqua Velva and that menthol cooling is just fading now.
It just amazes me that something that is 5 years older than I am can look so good and give a great shave. It is a shame that Gillette has moved away from these works of art which look timeless in favor of razors with $4 five blade cartridges and vibrating handles.
