First GEM shave!!!

I had my first GEM shave today......and by God was it awesome!

I have a 1912 with chain-linked metal handle. I used GEM Personna blades from Walgreens.

WTG; XTG; XTG = BBS

There is definitely a different feeling - much more audible feedback than any of my DEs. I had just a tiny bit of irritation on my neck...most likely due to issues with blade angle as it is my first shave with the new angle, but that should be remedied within a few shaves.

It's about 11 hours later, and I am just beginning to get some light stubble...this is awesome!

My main difficulty is that I have skin that is as sensitive as a baby's but, paired with beard hair that is as tough as barbed wire...not the easiest combo to deal with. I may have found the solutions to my problem with the GEM...I may be an SE convert!!!

They are amazing tools. Even with my love for Gillettes I still use a couple of 1912 styles.

I'm glad to see that SE works for you:thumbup1: Welcome to the small, but ever growing, cult... group of SE fans!
We accept you, we accept you! One of us, one of us!

I'm awaiting the arrival of blades so I can try some of my GEM and Micromatic razors. They sure seem to make a big impression!

By the way, 'Freaks' was lambasted as being exploitative of the actors' physical handicaps (challenges for the PC minded), but it was actually a pretty good flick. If you get a chance check it out. I was actually pretty impressed by the way some people just don't let even severe challenges get in their way. The actors turn in good performances and I think the director did a great job.

I know the movie is "Freaks", and I know the basic plot, but I've never seen it....is it any good?

It's worth watching at least once. All the "freaks" were real circus side show performers at the time. Part of the reason it caused such an uproar was that many people thought the "freaks" were too grotesque to be shown on screen. They weren't allowed to go many places at the studio, so they wouldn't disrupt the "normal" actors:rolleyes: Every now and then TCM will air it, it's also available on DVD.
An interesting tid-bit. The actor who jumps on the table and passes the cup is Angelo Rossitto, The Master from Beyond Thunderdome's Master Blaster.

Rick, I hope your first GEM shave will go as smooth as Razorburne's.

I just have a little question... Since I am DE guy, but I have found a few Ever Ready that my dad kept forever in his garage including brand new never used army kit with a miror and army stuff, what is the difference between the GEM, Ever Ready and Micromatic ? OHH and I want to buy SE blades if you can spare a few just PM me

Tommy, Gem and Ever Ready are brands names, but other than that they are 99% identical. Micromatic is one, well several versions, of the specific razors that Gem produced. By my calculations, the vast majority of guys here prefer the "patent 1912" models over any other SE razor made, well maybe not including earlier lather catcher models. I'd say chances are good that you have 1912 models. (we'll never know without a couple of pics:biggrin:) The Micromatic appears to be way too manly and bloodthirsty for these baby faced members:wink::lol:
I've said it before, I think every member here owes it to himself to give SE a real honest chance to work. I wrote up a little "tips" sheet found here, I did it with the Micromatic in mind, but the same applies to most any SE. My advise on blades is to grab a phone book and start calling every place with a pharmacy. Chances are good that at least one will have SE blades. If you do that and still can't find any, give me a PM and we'll work something out.

Hey, speaking of GEM info, I haven't seen Dave post in a while. Am I missing his posts, or has he been away? I hope all is well!

Well his wedding was on Tuesday, so I guess he's on his honeymoon.

I'm also guessing he chose to go back in time for his honeymoon.

I have seen it and it is very good. The cast are real people, basically just acting as themselves. The plot is unimportant except as a way to get to know the people, and they are amazing. Their difficulties are impossible to imagine and they have learned to deal with them and get on with their lives. Inspiring, actually.

Congratulations! I spent months as an unbeliever until I actually tried one.

I'm glad to see many others starting to realize how nice of a shave the SE gives.. especially from the line of Gems. Congrats on your new shaving tool!

Andy,

Thanks very much for the info and your offer. I will let you know about the blades if I can't find them locally.
I should take a few pics of the Ever Ready and post it. I will probably do it during the weekend though.

Meantime, I have found a few photos and one of them looks like this razor:
