First Foray into Restores - Ever Ready 200

if you have a scale, i'd do what i did. weight a similar sized brush you like the weight of (if you have one). weight the knot and handle of your restore and get the difference.

find that amound of weight in coins or washers (or slightly less to account for the epoxy) and ones that will fit in the opening nicely and use that many.

if you have 4 coins, space them evenly throughout the opening depth, if you have 2, same thing, just space them evenly.

that's my 2 cents, i'm sure others will have other options and opinions.

Or Twenty cents if using dimes ;)

Thanks for the helpful info. My TGN knot shipped out today, so I should be able to start working on seating it next week.

I have always just liked the weight of epoxy only. You can pretty much add anything you want to add weight. I use coins when I want more weight. From the bottom start with epoxy to make sure you have a good bond then alternate coins and epoxy so they don't have chance of moving around.
I suppose pennys are cheaper than epoxy, eh?

Knot is here! Time to get to work.

can't wait to see it all done. the handle looks amazing and that knot looks like a beauty.

i'm loving my TGN Finest.

keep the pics coming.

Fully drilled out using the flat bottomed dremel stone sanding bit again.

Liquid nails crystal clear sealant filled handle with three pennies inlaid at just off the bottom, middle, and top for shelf support. Letting it cure before setting the knot around 48-50mm. The handle is 55mm tall for reference. Test fitted the knot earlier, nice and snug at that loft. Gonna have to be careful about how much sealant I add in the last fill so it doesn't overflow the handle.

Here she is, plugged in at a nice 48mm loft to the tip of the bulb (103mm total height) and ready to chill for the next 48 hours to ensure a good set. Sorry, but youll have to wait a couple days for the bloom porn shots  Tomorrow I will tackle filling in the lettering while it rests.

First pass at filling in the paint. Will probably try another coat to get it a bit more even. The top of the R though is pretty much gone, but the rest retained it pretty well.

Also, I was fortunate to obtain this brush's Red and Green handled brothers today. On their way in the mail soon. Plan to make a set with them. Any suggestions on the other two knots? I'd like each to be different.

nice looking brush, paint looks fantastic and the butterscotch is gleaming.

as for the other knots, i'd get the same TGN Finest but get it in a FAN and maybe widen the opening to 24-25mm for a 24mm knot if you feel up to it (it's a great knot, i have it in my Vulfix 404). the 2nd could try a super or silvertip in bulb or fan (i have no experience with these grade knots)

can't wait to see the next ones. this style of handle is a classic and timeless. i love it's simplicity and it's very comfortable to hold.

Looking really, really good. I am looking forward to seeing the post bloom shot, as I am thinking about going bulb when I get another handle to restore.

Oh, and extremely jealous of the matched set you are working on. I would love to get another 200 handle (or two).

Thanks for the suggestions Bruce. I've got some time to figure it out and mull over the options. Heck, maybe one will be a Shavemac! If I can justify the cost over the TGN knots.

I knew from the start that I wanted the green handled version, but then when saw the matching red handled 200 on the bay I had to have it too. Those deep colored swirly handled 200's are just gorgeous and like you I love the hand feel.

Curses! Turns out that before finializing the purchase of the green handled Ever Ready, I was sent a better picture only to realize it's a 103S, not a 200! So while the green handle on it looked great, the upper black portion didn't match at all, so I passed. Back to the hunt!!

PS: First lather and bloom pics to come very soon

Ok, here they are folks, the moment you've been waiting for! The first lather and bloom!

Soaked for a few minutes and then loaded it up a bit with some Edwin Jagger Sea Buckthorn to break in and soap up the fibers a bit.

Palm lathered it to get a feel for the knot. Nice feel, soft and scrubby with some good backbone. Had to work for it to splay, and it snapped back into form pretty quick once I stopped applying pressure. Here's the result:

Next up, to give it a bit more break in and help eliminate a bit more of the funk, I loaded it with some Martin de Candre and took it for a spin in my Walmart Salsa Bowl (complete with custom UberLather Grooves™):

So after a rinse and a brisk brushing on my towel here she is in all her first bloom glory:

With my Duke 2 for comaprison:

Top Shot. For the price these are some nicely dense knots! Makes my Duke 2 feel light an airy by comparison when I ran my hand through it.

This was a ton of fun and I can't wait to get some good use out of this and start working on it's Red brother when it comes. Now to find a green.
