First few shaves with DE, some comments and observations

Hello all, :tongue_sm
a shaving thread on another forum (off topic asking if members use blade or electric) introduced me to DE shaving. Then I found this site, and manic59's excellent videos.

So I bought a Merkur HD on ebay a month or so ago along with a few different blades, badger brush, Proraso, and a cake soap that came with a very basic shaving kit, a few weeks later I got a Gillette Tech razor used off ebay for $12 shipped.

Here are some things off the top of my head, any input would be great.

-My first shave was with the HD and 7'oclock blades. All went well (only got a couple small nicks), I was surprised how easy it was to shave with a DE (previous to that I used a Gillette Sensor Excel).

-The Gillette Tech is MUCH less aggressive than the Merkur HD, and requires more passes for a smooth shave, I like the Merkur HD better.

-Applying lather with a brush feels great, and a little soap goes a long way, but if not well lathered up can feel slimy and thick keeping blade off skin.

-I have not shaved enough to pick up on differences between Derby and the Gillette 7 O'Clock blades, they seem very similar.

-Feather blades allow for very slow maneuvering around the chin area with little resistance and less (nearly no) pressure.

-I can shave against the grain on the first pass if I shave each day (except the chin and mustache where I go with the grain, then against). A complete shave can take as little as 5 minutes.

-Friends of mine are being turned onto DE after seeing mine. Thinking about getting another to try, from what I have read the Edwin Jagger DE87 (ivory handle) is moderately aggressive.

Thanks for all the information here.

Welcome John! Sounds like you are off to a great start and have some good razors! I can't speak highly enough about Proraso...all around great products. The lather will come with practice... Good Luck!

Welcome to the B. You're off to a good start. For any problems you might encounter, just ask. Also be sure to look at any of the video's on shaving, products, building lather, etc.

You'll find the members here more than willing to help you out, so enjoy your shaves and the time you spend here. :thumbup1:

Welcome to the good ship B&B. Take a stroll on the promenade deck and enjoy the voyage. :thumbup1:

Good analysis on your experience.

Always remember, relax but be vigilant when you shave!

Thanks everyone.

Welcome to B&B! Get ready to spend a lot of money. (All worth it, of course!)

I have a couple not-cheap hobbies (Jeep, boat), I don't see myself going too crazy with this one (hmmm... I think I said that with my first Jeep/boat too when a 2" lift, 31" tires/13' boat was enough.) :biggrin1:

Since getting the DE I have been talking non-stop about it, I wonder what people will get me for Christmas this year, haha.

Welcome again!

As so many others said, sounds like you're off to a fine running start and will probably encounter a very easy learning curve. I found Derbys to be OK, haven't yet tried the 7 O'clocks I have yet, but your early experience with Feathers is very encouraging. They really are great if used correctly. In the lower-cost range, might try Astras if you get a chance.

Keep us posted and ask questions as they arise!

- Bill

Shaved with the Feather blade again today.

After not shaving for 2 days I was able to easily go against the grain first pass with very light pressure, down, then 90* on the chin. No cuts. :tongue_sm
