What's new

First Feather blade shave ... wasn't what is seemed ?

Well being just a newbie and only using a DE for two weeks i decided it was time to try a Feather blade.

First blade I used was a Merkur that came with my razor, quite a nice shave for my first ever DE shave and i got four shaves out of it and I was converted.

Next up were Derby's as that's what came in the pack, 10 of them. Very disappointing i must say, first shave dragged, second was still rough from the first, third shave was ok and the fourth was better. Four shaves to get a decent one ?? mmmmm don't think they are for me.

So roll on this weekend and i'd built myself up to use a Feather, read all the horror stories of how sharp they were and folks cutting their throats open etc
So first impressions were it was excellent, great clean shave, shocked i had no cuts or nicks but i was mighty careful ...... and rather nervous i may add but I was really really impressed .
After my shave I went back online to order some more from The Shave Shack here in the UK, to my surprise I realised from looking at the blade packaging that i hadn't been sent Feathers :w00t: they had sent me Israeli's by mistake, and i gather these are re branded as Shave Shacks own from what I read ??

So still no Feather shave but I really like these and they are cheaper too, so i will look into getting some more :001_smile

I wouldn't write off the Derby altogether; they could be fine after corking them: running each edge through a piece of cork, or Styrofoam a few times before first use. It will smooth out any microscopic imperfections on the blade edge, likely eliminating those rough first shaves. :thumbup1:

This would make the Derby usable, so you wouldn't have to waste them. :tongue_sm

Once you get past that first Feather shave, you may never go back. They're all I use now. I have a bunch of Astras just laying around collecting dust.

On my scale if Feathers are a 10 then Astras are a 9, and 7 O'Clocks are an 8.5. So while they are a great product they're not that much better than the rest of the market. Don't get your hopes too high!

Everyone has their recommendations, but go with what works for YOU

Ive tried Feather, Astra, Merkur, Sharp, Shark, Derby....and my favorite is Derby. It just suits my shaving style. Plus 100 for $9 isnt bad either

lol to funny, how did the mix up happen?

I like Feathers quite a bit too. Though sometimes I like my blades not quite so sharp. Some days I want to enjoy my shave, not be a slave to per cation.

How many total shaves have you had?

When I first started, my problem was that I used up all my different blades before I was good enough to know it was the blades fault! Lather is a more likely culprit for skipping IMHO. I thought I hated Shark blades........just tried one again after 2 more months, and it may be my 'go to'. Glad I was able to try it again!

Unless you have given it at LEAST a month of DE blades with changes in variables, I'm not sure a judgement is going to be useful.

On a side, I love the first shave with a feather. And don't force too many shaves with a blade. I like to stick with 2 generally. Even a feather is only 30 cents each.
