So I got my first truly BBS shave this morning. (do I get a medal or something? )There were a few variables that were new to the equation, well just about all of them.
I don't know if I should figure out what made the difference through process of elimination, or just keep doing the same thing.
ok, up until today, I have been using my Muhle R89 and AoS sandalwood for the most part, with an Astra SP. Now, granted... I have amassed quite a bit of stuff and randomly try a different blade or cream or razor, but usually just one different thing at a time. I also have only shaved at the sink, face lathering after I gave up on the bowl (just so much easier IMO)
Today I went crazy and changed everything.
New Factors:
*Gillette Slim K3
*TOBS Avocado Cream, courtesy of Garrys sample shop
*Feather Blade
*Shower Shave
*LED antifog shower mirror
Why/How I think these variables made a difference:
Well, for starters, shaving in the shower is built in prep and continuous throughout the shave. Hot steamy room, built in hot rinse between passes etc.
Also, all that moisture almost forced me to use more product and more water with my product. I tend to make my lather a bit on the thick/dry side, thinking that thincker = creamier = better protection. Rookie. I know now that this is a mistake and will be correcting that. Additionally, TOBS Avocado is a great product. It was my first time using it out of the sample pack I got from Garry and I will say it is really great stuff. lathered easily, great glide and cushion, smelled great, rinsed clean and left my face smooth and soft.. I will be buying a tub of it most likely.
Feather blade, well... its just sharp! I really expected to get cut based on the one time I tried it in my R89, but i think the fact that I had it loaded in the Slim made a big difference. I started on #1 setting and it felt like it was quite weak, so I dialed it up until it felt too aggressive then dialed back down until I found the sweet spot (a 4-5, as it turns out)
Also the LED lighting in the mirror helped me to actually see what I was doing (the vanity lighting in my bathroom is weak). I bought it on a whim and figured if I didnt like it, June 14th I would throw it on the B/S/T and someone would nab it. Turns out I do, and will keep it
So that's my experience, and as always YMMV.
