found this razor and case at the flea market today. What caught my eye was the little blade box. The ball on the end of the handle pops out and contains some white substance(styptic, soap?). Looks nice to me. For my fellow pencil freaks, the pencil is marked 'THE BLACKFEET INDIAN PENCIL' , #2 PENCIL.

That stuff in the handle is more than likely soap scum. The ball end wasn't meant to be taken off.
Nice Old-Type set. Clean it with Scrubbing Bubbles and use epoxy to glue back ball-end in place. That should do it.
looks like Khacky/Army service set, but the blades case is from 501 pocket set

I ran into a seller a while back who thought the hollow handle was for storing a styptic pencil. Gave me nightmares about him ruining perfectly good handles that he thought were just "stuck."
I don't believe any of the military sets used gold razors. Looks more like a properly matched version of one of these style post-patent Old Type sets to me:
The Pocket Sets frequently had this type razor in it. The ABC sets are clearly recognizeable by the razor handle but this razor may very well be the correct one for the case.
Macdaddy I know what you mean. I found a single ring once that had been "cleaned" up with what I estimated to be 40 grit sandpaper! It made me sad to see the razor scratched that bad.
