What's new

Finally got it down

Hello everyone.

I first started reading the wetshaving forums and groups when I was 16. I was having a lot of trouble with razor burn using a Mach 3, and I took to the internet to research what the problem could be. I read a lot about DE razors and traditional shaving methods, and eventually purchased a Gillette Super Adjustable from eBay, TOBS Lemon Lime, 100 Derby blades, and a Best Badger brush from a local store.

Unfortunately, either due to my 16 year old inability to perfect my technique OR the sensitivity of my 16 year old skin, DE shaving was a nightmare. It tore my face up. I eventually gave up and went back to the Mach 3.

I eventually solved my razor burn issue by using a Panasonic electric shaver and discovering Tend Skin. Tend Skin was a real lifesaver for me. However over the next few years I did attempt DE shaving again..with the same results. I could also use a Gillette Fusion if I shaved with it every other day, but I would always end up with some type of irritation and pain. So I ended up just using the Fusion for special events when I needed a BBS shave.

It all changed early last month. I was cleaning out one of my bathroom drawers and came upon the Super Adjustable. I thought "what the heck", and took it, a Derby blade, and some Kiss My Face Mint cream into the shower with me. Lathered up with my old brush, and got a good shave! I couldn't believe it! I did get very slight irritation and a few minor knicks. But the shave was smooth and comfortable. A little Tend Skin after, and the irritation was minimal.

Motivated, I got back on the forum and started researching things again. I decided to try some Nivea Sensitive Balm, as I had only used alcohol-based products as an aftershave previously. Also bought a Thai Crystal alum stick from a local drugstore. I also switched from a salicylic acid based cleanser (Neutrogena) that I had been using for years, to Noxzema Cleansing Cream with Moisturizers. My skin has never been bad, but it has never glowed like it does now after using the Noxzema twice a day. Highly recommend Noxzema!

Using the Nivea Balm has completely ELIMINATED any trace of razor burn and discomfort. I am now using Feather blades, and can get a ridiculously smooth BBS shave with zero irritation. I have never been able to achieve this in my life.

Of course, the downside is that I'm now on a spending spree. I'm really enjoying the Proraso white line, and Aqua Velva Ice Sport mixed with Nivea has become my go-to aftershave. If I feel like I had a slightly rough shave, I'll use the Tend Skin. However it is no longer the complete necessity that it once was.

Just wanted to share my success story! My skin has never looked or felt better, and I'm so happy to have finally tackled the DE that I wanted so badly to work as a kid.

Evan, this is a really great story. Sounds like you just needed to be at the right time and right place in your life for this to work. This should be a lesson to anyone to never give up and keep searching for something that works for you and to not just "settle" for adequate shaves...or anything in life for that matter.

Thanks for sharing.

I am 60 years old and started shaving at 16. I wish I had the shaving knowledge you now have at an early age. It was many years and significant pain before I gained the experience you now have. You sound like a very mature young adult. There are a number of inexpensive shave products that don't break the bank and perform well above their price point. You are the man!

If you like Tend Skin. You can make your own for about $3. Ingredients are isopropyl alcohol, uncoated aspirin and witch hazel. All can be bought at any of the dollar store.

Thanks!

And I do make my own Tend Skin...I only purchased one bottle of the real stuff before finding a recipe online.

Great story Evan! Patience is definitely the key to this process, which would explain why it's been a slow one for me.
