What's new

Finally, a soap I love!

I am still relatively new at this, and I started out using C.O. Bigelow cream. I like it, but it leaves a horrid residue in the sink and on my razors. I tried some VDH soap that was included in a BST lot, and found it to be functional but thoroughly unenjoyable.

I'm opposed in principle to spending more than $10 on a soap or cream, so I have intentionally avoided AOS, Trumper, etc. A week or so ago I happened upon an ebay seller who makes goat milk shaving soap. A 4+ ounce bar is $4.50 with shipping, so I figured it was worth trying and ordered a bar of bay rum. Last night I melted it into a wooden Yardley bowl and face-lathered.

:a47:

One use and I am hooked. I absolutely love this stuff--next up is sandalwood. Anyone else tried soap from seller sundancesoapery?

Good for you for finding a soap you like! I'm sort of in the process of that, myself, after almost using creams exclusively.

Bigelow does indeed leave a film behind, moreso than any of my other creams. I hit my razors with an old toothbrush after every shave so it doesn't build up. Keeps those annoying wax spots from Astra blades from building up, too.

It's good to hear that the film is unique to Bigelow. I bought a tube of Cremo yesterday but haven't tried it yet. They are running a "free after rebate" promotion, so I figured it was worth a shot.

Haven't tried them - but was about to pull the trigger. The relatively high olive oil content was a bit off-putting, but I really loved that there is straight lard in there. I think I will try a puck (muffin in this case?) now that someone has confirmed getting a decent lather out of it!

How's the Bay Rum scent?

I just picked some up on EBay based on your recommendation. Your description & the sellers are really up my ally. I have very sensitive skin & moisturizing is what I need.

Price, melting, etc. Previously I have to add 2 or 3 different products to my bowl to get the protection, lather, moisturizing I need.

Thanks!

I love it. It's fairly subtle but lingers.

I didn't include a link in the OP because I didn't want to sound like a commercial. I figured anyone who was interested could find the seller based on the name I listed, but I've since gotten a couple of PMs asking for a link. Seller is sundancesoapery. Here is the soap I bought.

I got one soap from them awhile back. I'm sure her bath soaps are great but let's just say my mileage varied with the shaving soap. I couldn't get it to lather to save my life. Just a lot of suds and bubbles. Now the recipe could've changed since July....I don't know.

Edit: Looks to me like you got the bath soap; what I got was the shaving soap.

Yeah I actually read some comments - don't remember if it was here or elsewhere - that the lather was thin/bubbly. At the time it was definitely written off as just another olive oil soap. Still haven't bought yet - maybe Slyko can chime in with his results when he gets his. For the price - wouldn't be horrible if it just ended up as bath soap!

I sure hope it lathers, but if not I can always mix in some Williams just for that. I've found Williams to lather like crazy, but too airy & no moisturizer. Am I just being naive?? 1 product to do it all???

I have found that combining 3 or 4 different products, I can get a lather that is 2nd to none. But I have to do that? I've even tried some $$$$$$ European soaps & creams.

In my experience no 1 thing does it all.

My wife took the camera to work today, so I gave it my best shot with my Android camera.

Here is the soap melted into a Yardley bowl (see OP):

It's a bit thinner than I like, but a touch more product takes care of that. I'm still getting accustomed to lathering soap rather than cream.

I wish I could post the smell. Every time I smell it I like it more than the time before.

looks too airy. more like bubbles than an actual lather. i have done this before with soaps and they just end up in the shower.
seller sure does have quite the variety of scents though. might go back there when i run out of bath soap. thanks for sharing.

Yes, it was. Like I said, it was a bowl-lather for photos only and turned out too thin. I used more product and went back to a face lather to shave and it was much thicker. It still isn't as rich a lather as some products, but the moisturizing and smell more than make up for it.

I had the same results as Kevan with this shave soap, worked great as a bath soap. If you really want a good Goat-milk Shave Soap, I'd recommend Suds & Sparkles, I get a rich & thick lather and it moisturizes well, a recent thread; http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...kles-Peppermint!?highlight=suds+&+sparkle ; http://stores.ebay.com/Suds-And-Sparkles?_rdc=1

Well............ I apologize. I didn't take any pictures! Here's the one online:

& the link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Homemade-GO...064?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cbdf1418 .................. & no........... I'm not getting paid.

Nice turn around, I bought it on EBay on Thursday, it arrived on Monday. From KY to CA.................. not bad!

First thing to notice when I opened my mail box was........................ BOW! This spicy bay rum is just that..................... SPICY! Nice homey packaging & a personal note from Deena. Doesn't melt well in my mug. I tried the microwave & mug trick, don't......... my entire kitchen smells like Tortuga. It doesn't melt. No glycerin. But I can smell the goats milk too.

Can't wait to try it tomorrow. I can still smell the spice on my fingers from simply unpacking it. Holy Smokes!

Nice! I can relate, I do not see spending more than that as well, I have settled on Mike's as my only soap, and ASTRA SP as blades, can't see any reason to go further

Man, you don't know what you are missing. Speick stick costs $5.50, a puck of Harris is $15. Both are triple milled, and that Harris puck will outlast 3 puck of non-tripled milled soap. Both will also kick the snot out of olive oil soap, IMO.
