I would take a serious look at Nacet blades. They are inexpensive and about as good as you can get... esp if you have a coarse beard like I do.... sharp yet smooth.

I think those are probably the best blades to try first.
In terms of
very sharp and harsh versus smooth and not as sharp,
they seem to me to be right about in the middle.
I like them.

It's unlikely that I got got more experience and then lost it
and regained it on each feather blade.
When I was testing different blades,
longevity was one of the things that I tested for
and I tested a few blades of each of various brands until they wore out.

I got a pack of Nacet blades in my sample pack. When I try them I'll let you know how I got along with them.

+1. The Merkur blades are horrible. They’re the only blades that I’ve ever switches out in the middle of a shave
For me, I've ditched the Merkur blades mid-shave and BIC Sensitive. They just don't work for me.
Throw in a German Wilkie. I think that they are smooth, and cut close, with no irritation, at least for me. YMMV...
+1. I use Feathers as my only blade in all my razors except the very few high-efficiency ones.
