"Fills"

Looking at estate pipes advertised here and there, I have noticed some mention of "fills" in the bowls. I gather that this is some sort of wood putty to fill holes, but have no idea of how the holes may have been caused, what the consequence is to the smokeability of the pipe or any long term effects. Would appreciate any info. Thanks!

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Usually they are minor cosmetic blemishes in the wood. My billiard has a couple, they are not a big deal. It just affects the looks.

They really aren't holes, more like small pits in the smooth surface of the wood. Depending on the color of stain used, the fills can be more noticeable than with a different shade. Also as you smoke a pipe over a period of years, it will darken as the wood absorbs moisture, tar, carbon etc. however the fills will will not. So they may be more noticeable to the kin you pass them on to than they would be to you right now.

I don't think they detract from the pipe at all unless you are paying for a high en pipe. I have a $150+ Peterson spigot that has some fills. It kind of erks me they are there so I just don't think about them. I just got a new Boswell poker that actually has a couple small pits on the rim. I'm glad JM didn't fill them in they are a characteristic of the wood used to carve a handmade product.
