Feather Portable

Ok, Holy CRAP these things are aggressive! I've been trying out my new Feather Portable, and it's been giving me plenty of weepers and razor burn no matter what blades I try and how gently I try to shave.

I guess I need more practice!?

OK, changed my mind a bit. Does anyone here have the head assembly for a chrome plated Gillette ball end tech they might be willing to part with?

I've improved a lot my technique using this razor by correcting angle and pressure mistakes, you should persevere.
Maybe you noticed that the blade is a bit more exposed at one side, it can help you a lot.

It's not supposed to be like that, unless you have dropped the razor, or your razor is defective. The blade exposure should be equal on both sides. :thumbup1:

I had one briefly, that is as you describe: the blade sat closer to the edge of the guard on one side, vs. the other.

This made the one side of the razor dangerously aggressive, and the other side ridiculous mild. After inflicting some huge cuts with it over two shaves, it was promptly returned to "pauldog" for a replacement.

I didn't see it like a default because I have an other razor with this specificity (Parker 90R).
I didn't cut myself or noticed that the soft side was inefficient.
The difference is very thin, maybe less than 1/2 mm, I can just notice it by comparing how the holes of the base are covered.

I had this experience the first few times I used my Feather razor (forget which blades I was using). I picked it up a week or so ago after several months (possibly nearer a year) and found it worked very well with Derby blades. I'm guessing my skills have improved over that time. A good travel razor - comes with a case, costs £10 with no postage costs and so not a big deal if it gets lost.

Yhea, I'm going to keep at it. I would still like to get a secondary head assembly for it.

My current line of thinking is this...It's essentially a more agressive version of a Gillette tech, in a handy carrying package for travel. if I get used to an aggressive razor at home, and learn to really shave gently, then when I use an almost identical but far more forgiving razor on the road, I won't have any nasty looking screw ups if I'm all bleary and in some strange place when it's time to shave.

i've only tried my portable twice - both times I got some weepers on my neck and chin and it hurt like hell. I've since switched back to my trusty fat handle Tech but i'm sure in time i'll revisit the feather portable again

I heard that Tech was pretty forgiving so I was disheartened when I kept nicking myself with my Feather Portable. I'm glad to hear it actually is somewhat aggressive.

If the razor seems well-put-together, keep at it, or come back to it after more practice. My technique has improved and I'm down to one nick per shave excluding my Adam's apple... Right now it's pleasantly aggressive.
