Feather Blades?

Hello, I'm new to safety razor shaving. Are the Feather blades really the best blades to use? If not what would you consider to be equal or better? Thanks.

"Best" is a very subjective word. Feather blades are high quality, sharp, and very consistant in manufacture.

If you are looking for a good blade for "you"..... You will need to say what beard type you have (coarse or thin), how frequently you shave, and what you use for a razor.

If you have not already done so, stop into the Hall of Fame and tell everyone a little about yourself

Better in terms of ?, a better shave? , longevity ? If you mean a better shave, that's purely personal. Some love blades that others won't use for different reasons, feathers are one of the sharpest blades you can use but that may not be your best shave. I like feathers in some razors, my mergress, tech, or EJ89. But in aggressive razors like my fatip or futur I like a Astras or voskhods. A good idea is to get a sampler pack with an assortment of blades that guys favor like Astras, feathers, 7 o'clock, personna meds and whatever peaks your interest. Good luck

+1. Important to identify your beard type! I have a light beard and sensitive skin (that's one reason I'm "Touchy"!) and love Feather, Merkurs and Timors. But I've had excellent results with Rainbows .15/blade, Lord Super Chromes .10/blade, and Lord Patinums, .15/blade. It can be daunting though, so get some kind of sampler for a start. Good luck and have fun shaving!

Welcome to the community!

As the brethren said. Don't look for or think about "THE Best" of anything. No such thing in life. As far as good blades, recommended blades, you will find lots of opinions here. If you try any one of about a dozen brands that are almost universally recommended you will do just fine while you are learning your own particular needs and getting your technique down. Use good products, prep your face, take your time, no pressure, watch your blade angle, go for 2 passes and re-lather between passes, did I say no pressure. Hang out on the forum and check our the B&B Library and Wiki articles. Lots of good advice and discussion there.

On Feathers... many consider it among the sharpest blade out there but opinions vary. Some swear by them and that's all they use. Others don't have much love for them and have chosen very sharp blades that are more forgiving, last longer and are less money. I have a few and will use them but I probably won't buy more Feathers.

First off I like the feather blade, find out for me it dulls rather quickly for me same w/ gf. I will still use them. Astra is a good one for the money in my book. Have a order of Personna Lab Blue Double Edge Blades coming in :) I hear they are also good.

I thought about giving KWilliams40 a blade recommendation. I will go with Beerhunter. Astra SP and Personns Super (Labs) are my top pick, everyday, buy in bulk ($10-13/100!) blades.

Hello and welcome!

When I first started I went through the same thing. Feathers were the first blades I ordered online. They are great blades but I wish I'd have gotten a little more technique down before using them.

Coarse beard. I shave every 2 to 3 days. Multi blade razors give me razor bumps(I've been using an Andis T-Outliner for years), that's why I'm giving DE razors a shot...

hi KW40, welcome to B&B!

seems your question has already been answered - sharpest does not necessarily mean best. get yourself a blade sampler pack and try a heap of different blades. I find feathers nick and burn me too much, I prefer Astra SPs and Derbys but I enjoy most of the gillette range, ymmv.

for me the feather is not the best blade. while i like the first shave they always seem to miss just a bit of hair in a few spots no matter what i do 2-3 small spots i can go over them many times in different directions and by the time they get removed its a mess. but the shave is very comfortable and otherwise very close. many blades i like more.

if you have some blades already that you dont like you could take advantage of the blade exchange here in this forum section. i would gladly send you a few to try out if i had some.

but to answer your question imo no the feather is not the best blade my personal top fav blades are the polsilver super ir's and i would shave with these every day aside from the fact i love to have variety, gillette silver blue and black 7 'oclock (so far im trying out the full 7'oclock line) and for my milder smoother blade choice voskhods are simply awesome in the right razor. my fav cheap blade so far the the lord platinum. but i have a TON left to try that are available out there lol.

Another member here, Cerbul13, posted with the very same problem. Maybe you would like to get in touch with him and discuss this further.

^^ im going to try the feather in a fatip and see if i have the same issue im thinking using the bar style its not enough to lift the hair for the thin edge of the feather in those spots. where as some not as sharp smoother blades could be just a bit thicker or be able to "catch" those hairs. just a thought i could be way off here
