Feather AS Users - easier than traditional angle?

Good Evening Gents,

When initially learning DE shaving i was using a merkur 34 C and 4-5 shaves into it progressed to the feather AS and have not looked back since. I recently acquired a new EJ gold barley razor, to experiment with different blades and also to see how id fare with the traditional angle after using the AS for so long. Now is it just me, or is it harder to go back to the traditional angle after using a feather razor for a while? I suppose this question is more directed at those who own this razor. The feather is just so much smoother compared to my EJ even while both of them are loaded with feathers. No matter how hard i focus on the angle its still significantly "scrapier"

Is this perhaps testament to how well the AS is designed? do others have issues going back to "traditional angle" DE razors after using a feather for a while?

Thank you for your time and thoughts.

I get along great with the AS-D1 and have used it for extended periods but my method involves monitoring the feel of the blade so when I recently picked up the Aristocrat Jr. a couple weeks back without thinking I went for that same blade edge feel and have been getting really great shaves. Is the angle different? Yes, but I noted that after finding the right feel.

+1 - I too get along great with my Feather AS just fine and I agree for the first couple weeks you just need to monitor the feel of the blade then Bingo!!! There is nothing like it. The smoothness of the razor is unmatched.

I do go by feel as well, i guess what im trying to say is the AS simply feels so much better ha ha..

what an incredible razor...

I owned 2 - both bought with the stand and in the velvet coffin box - both were horrendously mild.

I tried them each for 20-25 shaves experimenting with 4 different DE blade types - Feather, Astra SP, Gillette Blue SP & Derby.
I tried every angle known to man kind.
I tried every type of pressure known to man kind.
I tried with 1 day stubble and the result was mediocre, I tried with 3-4 days of stubble and the result after 12 full passes and one full hours was horrible - it removed less than 20% of my stubbles.

When I sold them both to 2 advanced experienced wet shavers - they both re-sold them after 3-4 weeks of horrendous shaves.

I have stiff, curly and pretty coarse stubble (for a Scandinavian guy) - and the Feather is a mystery to me. They either have a problem with one of their machines at the plant that makes the Feather DE's or their razors are useless for people with stiff curly beard.

agreed. it's the razor i reach for when i want a trouble free, irritation free, smooth shave. there is no thinking with it, at least not any more for me.

once i got the angle down, which is quite simple, it has been smooth sailing ever since

when i use it, i try to use it for a month or so before switching it out. when i pick up my new DE razor, it only takes a pass or 2, to the adjusted angle back on track.

Agree completely with Claus

I agree that the AS is much smoother than the EJ. The AS is my go to razor, and I have a thick coarse beard, although I still enjoy using my Ikon Bulldog open comb from time to time, and I would like to try a Weber, if they ever restock. I guess it all comes down to the YMMV issue.

interesting you note this. as i have a thick fast growing beard that barbers dread shaving usually.. however it is not curly as yours is..

i have heard of someone else with your beard type with issues with the AS as well..
