Feather AS-D2 Selling Price. Really?

$225 retail for this. I'm sure it is a precisely made shaving instrument and all that..... but really? Seems a bit steep IMO compared to the other stainless steel options out there. Not sure why it commands approximately $40 to $50 more than some of the others. Maybe someone could enlighten me :biggrin1:.

Based on how the AS-D1 performed for me...I really do not have a clue. I sold mine fairly quickly after trying to use it for a while. Some folks swear by it, I mostly just swore at it. :001_tt2: Though some have verified that it does indeed work better than it's predecessor, it's not THAT much better. Certainly not to warrant that price, at least for me. YMMV.

I'm curious, why did you buy the AS-D2 if the AS-D1 didn't work for you?

i dont think he did he said the d1 did nto work and he has no idea how the d2 will work. his comments were based on what other people have said.

Well, i just received my AS-D2 from Connaught Shaving and paid more than $225, but got the stand. I have seen/used pretty much all the SS Razors out there the fit and finish on the Feather is WAY above all of them. It is truly amazing and PERFECT. I have only shaved once with it and while it was mild, it did shave me with 2.5 passes. the fit and finish are what you are paying for. Does it shave that much better, probably not. Does it look and feel that much better, all day.

I was indeed referring to my AS-D1 that I sold. Also, I was talking about others that gave their oppinions on the AS-D2 had said it shaved better than it's predecessor. Perhaps I could have stated things in a more clear way but hopefully what I was trying to say makes more sense now.

I can see that. The only stainless steel razors I've shaved with first hand are the Ikon Deluxe OC, the ATT Atlas R1, and the Weber Polished. Of those three, I'd say the finish of the Ikon is the best and the Weber the worst with the Atlas in between (they are all above average mind you). It's hard to imagine a razor more precisely made and finished better than the Ikon.... but I suppose it's possible. The kicker is that I enjoy the shave of those in almost the reverse order.... the Atlas and Weber I enjoy shaving with equally.... but they are different shaves in terms of aggressiveness.

I guess I'm just curious why the significantly higher price. Because they are new? Will the price drop as the novelty wears off?.... or are they just that good to continue to command such a higher price?

I got my AS-D2 from Connaught Shaving for about $185.00 and I am completely satisfied with the purchase. I love the look, feel and shave that I am getting with it. I have not owned or used the AS-D1 so I can't really comment on any differences. I do not find it difficult to find and maintain a proper angle throughout my shave. I get consistent 2 pass + some touchup BBS shaves with it using both Persona Labs and Feather blades so far. I will be trying out some Polsilver SI blades in the AS-D2 next.

I wouldn't pay that for a Feather AS D-2 That def out of range.

Are you sure $225.00 + includes the stand as well ?

No stand, but connaught shaving has it for just under $210 and shaving.ie has it for just over $210 both including shipping to the U.S. Maybe I was at the top end of retail with $225. IB gives you a 5 pack of Feather blades.... so that's worth something.

DE razors are a niche market (i.e. very few buyers)

High end stainless steel DE razors are even MORE of a niche market (i.e. even fewer buyers)

The fewer buyers the lower the number product which means the higher the cost per item.

It is basic economics 101.....

I would be surprised if Feather sells 1000 units world wide per year compared to tens of million of cart razors a year.

Good point. I know that I couldn't make a stainless steel razor of the same quality and sell it for even 30 times what they are asking. It just seems like you've gotta be able to price it according to the market. When Above the Tie came out with the Titan and Atlas razors, they were priced more similar to the other stainless steel razors out there. Hey, at whatever price it is.... it's still a bargain when compared to carts :thumbup1: .

I think I have all the latest and greatest stainless razors, and there are four that I won't ever part with. My Tradere SB, Tradere OC, Cobra, and my Feather. In fact, I just got the Feather back from Reliable Electoplating with a Rhodium finish, and I think it may be as beautiful as any razor I own. With a 7 o'clock Black blade and the Ikon Open Comb replacement base, its a really fine shaver and has excellent balance in the hand. Compared with the Pils and what I paid for it, the Feather isn't over-priced, IMHO. In fact, I think the Tradere is still under-priced compared to the rest of the competition.

I didn't get along with the Feather AS D1.

I love my Tradere solid bar on a weber bulldog or wave handle.

At $200.00 or more I don't see myself buying the new Feather any time soon.

Got mine from the same place (when it first appeared there was a 15% discount I believe), also completely satisfied for the last month I have been using this razor. I did try a AS-D1 but apparently mine was a bad one as it wouldn't shave more then a few hairs no matter what I tried. Feathers, Personna Med and Blues, Iridiums and Polsilver are the blades that work best for me in this razor.

The finish of the Ikon baseplates (I own all three) is very disparate as is their color. There is a roughness about the baseplates that tells me that the last buffing is not there compared to the Feather ( I own a Feather AS-D1).

I also own and use the Weber Bulldog (3 inch) handle on the Feather head. The Weber handle is a joy for me as I am used to vintage Gillettes and find the shorter handle more comfortable than the original Feather. The polished finish of the Weber handle is nowhere near the quality of the Feather original.

My Weber/Feather/Ikon combo is now at Dave (www.restoredrazors.com ) for buffing and replating. I want my favorite razor to be up to what is possible!

When my combo arrives I will post pictures of it to show how the finish of the Ikon and Weber parts can be improved upon!

That is very cool that you've discovered that combo..... and that you're having Dave replate them to make them all look uniform together. That's above and beyond a "Frankenrazor" :001_cool:

Can't wait to see photos when it arrives!!
