Feather AS-D1 vs. Muhle R41 Grande

Thanks to Phil at Bullgoose Shaving, I now have in my possession a Muhle R41 Grande. (I ordered it Saturday morning; Phil shipped it out Saturday afternoon; and it arrived today, Monday! How is that for service? Phil, you are the man!)

As some of you may know from my posts, I really like my Feather AS-D1 and have been using it almost daily for many months. I especially appreciate how mild it is. I can whip it around with abandon and still not cut myself. However, I have taken to using shims with it to try to get a closer shave. So far, out of all the razors I have ever used, my closet shaves have been with my Braun electric. DE razors and carts have given me very good shaves, but I would like to see if I can get as close a shave with a DE as I can with the Braun (without shredding my skin, of course!). NOTE: I have a full beard, so I only shave my neck and cheeks (at least daily; sometimes twice a day just for the fun of it).

Having shaved this morning, I will need to wait until tomorrow morning to try out the R41. In the meantime, I would note that the R41 with the Grande handle feels and looks pretty substantial, and its handle is surprisingly a bit longer that the Feather's already good-sized handle. However, for what it is worth, there is a vast difference in the heft and apparent quality of the two units. The Feather is noticeably heavier, and it just drips quality in its construction. The R41 appears to be a nicely made, cast, pot-metal blade-holder (nothing wrong with that).

Tomorrow, I'll report back on my first shave with the R41. I plan to use I Coloniali Rhubard shave cream (lots of oil, apparently) and a new Polsilver Super Iridium blade. (Phil sent me a bunch of blades, too--gratis!)

Has anyone else compared these two? (I know at least one of you has!)

I have no experience with the Feather AS-D1 but do own a Muhle R41 Grande. The R41 is an extremely efficient razor once you respect it's requirements in terms of angle and no-pressure. Give the stock handle a whirl, but you may find, as I did, that a heavier stainless steel handle such as the Weber bulldog or classic, provides a better balance and resultant shave. Good luck!

BTW, I too have ordered from BullGoose and never cease to be amazed at how quick things are shipped! Makes me wonder if his facilities are next door to USPS/UPS!

Jeff. I cannot add anything towards experience with the razors. But what I am truly curious about is the rhubarb shave cream. Once I read that I scrolled back up to the top and noticed exactly what I had expected. Washington! I'm from Spokane and saw that product while shopping the bullgoose store this weekend. If it's worth the price I may order it next time the misses doles out allowances!

Just remember that you're going from a Toyota Camry to a BMW M Series, and all will be good. +1 to Phil and Bull Goose. Fastest shipping of any of my regularly used suppliers, and perfect service.

Just curious, how are you applyying the shim(s) to your Feather? I use a padding uder the blade and it seems to work fairly well (about equal to a Tech). Just looking for other ideas. I wish you the best with the R-41. I am one of those who found it just too aggressive. While I have no problems with the Fatip, Tradere, and other Old, New etc OC razors, the R-41 was a notch too high for my face.

Yup. Putting the weber bulldog on my R41 was awesome. Totally changed everything for me. If the AS-D1 can do the same, I agree, you will thank all who helped nudge you there.

Well, I couldn't wait. Could you? After a good five-mile run and a hot shower to warm things up, I went for it.

Meh... I need to use it a bit more than once to be sure. Yes, it is like holding a blade in one's fingers, or holding the blade with a stick (I love that picture someone posted!). But it shaves only a little closer than my shimmed AS-D1, and NOT as close as my Braun electric. It is definitely more FUN than the Braun, but not as much fun as the Feather.

Pretty undramatic (though I was a bit nervous)--other than a small bump on my neck that the R41 did not take in stride. Good think I have a styptic pencil!

More tomorrow.

PS: The I Coloniali Rhubarb shave cream is awesome!

Phil is awesome to deal with. Always a personal email, extremely fast shipping, and probably the best customer service I've ever experienced.

I see it as an m5 to a Camry but ymmv.

M5 to an old school topless Shelby cobra.

Jeff, if the R41 doesn't work out for you, try an Old Type or a New OC next. I just used an Old Type for the first time this morning and it was a very smooth and efficient shave.

^ Yes, I should have waited... Ow! My neck hurts! I'll probably take tomorrow off (from shaving, not from work)...
