Feather AS as beginner razor?

S

specB

I'm looking to start shaving with a DE razor, and as you all know, picking out the equipment is half the fun. I read that the Feather Stainless is not very aggressive, but would it be a good choice for a complete novice, as compared to a Merkur HD? Or should I get the Merkur (or something similar) and gain some experience wet shaving before upgrading? Thanks, and I love the forum!

The only razor I wouldn't recommend for a beginner would be a slant bar. If you like the feather, I'd say go for it, it might end up being your only razor. and good luck.

Welcome to B&B!

I do not know the Merkur. but the Feather is a great razor. Very easy to use, hard to cut or nick yourself with it. Also it reduces irritation by the way it was designed. In order to do so, they had to make it mild. But it does a great job. So from that point of view a nice beginners razor. The price is something else. Why not start with a Feather Popular? Also a mild shaver, but that will cost you some 15 usd. And you can always "upgrade" later to a razor that fits your needs, when you know what razor fits you best. I started with a Slim Twist myself and that was a nice razor (the Popular is also a sort of Slim Twist). I learned to shave properly with it, and then could start looking for the razor that fitted me best.

If you want a mild razor you could buy a Gillette Tech Instead and have enough money left over to buy a brush, blades and other shaving supplies.
But if that money is burning a hole in your pocket, go for it, if you don't like it you can sell it on the forum.

agreed - for a first razor - don;t get so spendy so you can buy all the gear you need to get properly wet shaving for a little over the price of just the feather - brush - cream - cheap bowl - razor blades - styptic stick - bandaids :)

MuhleR89 is mild and a great shaver - 45 bucks delivered at superior shave.

even if you have the spare cash - your first won;t be your last so ease in :)

just my nickel

Until you're sure you want to stick with DE shaving, there's no reason to empty your wallet on a razor. I'd go with the suggestion above of buying a Tech or Tech clone for your first razor. It'll be mild enough to learn on and provide excellent shaves for a long time. You could also check out dridiot's eBay store and pick up a NOS Gillette G1000 for a very reasonable price.

The Muhle R89 is one of the best razors on the market today. I have not tried the Feather All Stainless (and don't intend to at it's price), but I would be hard pressed to believe it is superior to the Muhle.

Buy the Muhle, and use the rest of the funds to get yourself a nice brush, some shaving cream, shaving soap, blades, and aftershave.

For the amount the Feather costs, you could buy a half dozen nice quality vintage Gillettes.

Don't fall for the line that you need a 170$ razor to get the best results.

Nope, you don't. I fell for that line early on and despised the salesman ever since.

I get just about the same results with a PILS as I do with a lowly tech. Many other razors do not do as well, but I found that a tech works for me. (there are many $ implied in the word *found)

Get a vintage Gillette tech for 8$ and get rolling.

Should you get one? If you have the clams and want one. I think it will serve you well and you'll get a lot of use out of it.

Man, a lot of guys like that Muhle. Cool.

If you have the money for it then why not. If you really want it , you will buy
it soon or later anyway. Of course a 10 dollar gillette tech would be good enough also, but its the same for any of us.

+1. Buy it now, because you'll likely just buy 3 or 4 lesser razors to slake your thirst for a Feather, then you'll buy the Feather anyways.....

My choice for a beginner razor would be a basic Gillette superspeed. Cheap, and I find I like it better than the tech. My favorite razor only cost me $18. No need to spend so much!

I should have disclosed in my lowly Tech advice that I was planning on ordering the Feather SS. Woopsie.

It all depends on how much you have to spend. If you don't blink at $130, why not? If your bankroll's a more human scale, I'd say buy an EJ89 for ~$26 and see if DE shaving sticks. Upgrades are always possible, as are lateral moves.

It really isn't. Both are great razors, but the Feather has nothing on the Muehle, IMO. Just different aesthetics. I love them both, but for the beginner I would absolutely say get the Muehle.
