Feather Artist model difference

Hello, hope i posting in the right spot...
I was lucky enough to borrow a feather SS, and it gave me the best shaves ever, so i have decided to get one, looking at the models, i can see that the different model have different shape on the edge there the blade is, and feather say i changes the shave, but does it really then you are using it. And are there a real different shaving with the models, or is more the blade there make it change.. Hope you understand that im trying to say

Hope for a little feedback on what, and what model you prefer and why.
Hoping to hear from your lovely wet shavers
🙂

Yes, they vary by how much of a bump they have where the blade clamps. The SS is the most prominent, the DX the least, and the SR is somewhere in the middle. Feather's reasoning is that the bump on the SS aids in stretching the skin. On the other hand, it makes it hard to vary your shaving angle--the bump prevents you from using a flatter angle. With the DX style you can go very flat if you like.

Since you liked the SS that may not be a big deal to you. Lots of people do like it. If I'm shaving with an AC blade (rarely) I prefer as low an angle as I can get, and I stretch with my off hand out of habit, so I use a razor that's more like a DX. Well, used. I gave it to my nephew when he was here last month.

I have the SS in a folding version, and the SR in a kamisori style. I prefer the SR version because of the smaller lip.

If you use the Feather pro super blades you can use a lower angle. These blades are slightly wider then the regular pro blade.

I don't have any of them but artist club blades feel the best when they are cutting at an angle flattest to my skin as possible. As such I would get the Dx version.

Slickness is a sickness
I have the SS, SR, and DX and all are very good shavers. The difference is primarily the shave angle, with the SS being steepest - in my experience.

Yes, in short it does change the way the shave feels. Though it will be difficult to know if you prefer the shaving feel of the SS, DX, or SR without trying them all.

I mostly use the DX but I also like to use my SS.

I own all three.

Until recently, the DX and SS models were the only ones you could choose from.
The DX gave somewhat more aggressive shaves, in particular during the first two or three shaves after inserting a new blade. The SS, with the exception of the Scotch Wood model, has scales that I never cared much for.
DX and SR replicate classic straight razors quite nicely, because of the scales the SS (again, with the exception of the Scotch Wood) is a bit more removed.

The more recently introduced SR model seems to combine the advantages of the DX and SS without any of their disadvantages.
No doubt in my mind, that is the model that I recommend to someone looking at buying a Feather AC razor.
The decision is even made easier by the fact the SR model is only slightly more expensive than the entry-level SS model.

Hope this helps…

I grabbed 2 folding Feather DX razors from Amazon.
The white was $120 and the wood was $140 (I think the wood is still $140).

Is the wood handle better than the white resin handle?

It looks like the wood handle cannot be sterilized - so how do you clean the handle?

Do I keep the white or the wood???

Happy Monday.

Neither handle is 'better', it is simply a matter of personal preference. I have the Artist Club DX with the wooden scales and I have never needed to sterilize it; I cannot imagine why I would want to. I avoid getting the scales wet during the shave by keeping the pivot above the level of the blade. In the unlikely event that I needed to clean the scales then a damp cloth would be sufficient. I would air the razor to ensure the scales were fully dry following such cleaning.

This.

I have had my Feather AC razors for years and never felt the need to sterilise the razors, but after each shave I also dry the inside of the scales with a towel and once in a while I add a drop of Ballistol to the pivot.

Feather also states:
  • ACD-R and ACD-N (folding and kamisori type models) can be disinfected by boiling or using ethanol.
Do not apply those sterilization to the wooden handle of ACD-RW.
  • Do not use sodium hypochlorite for disinfection.

As a straight razor user I prefer the DX-Kai EXCELIA but I use them with Proguard blades. Between the SS and the SR, I like the first one better because it is more relaxed in use with blades without protection. If it is to start shaving with AC blades I would choose the SS, the Sar has the labia minora but for price and aesthetics I would choose the SS, and better kamisori.

Yes all the models feel different! The geometry of the tips make a big difference
