Feather AC

I am contemplating purchasing a Feather Artist Club razor. I have read the reviews here, and they seem pretty positive. My question, which probably sounds stupid, is do you do multiple passes with a straight type razor or just one. I currently do WTG, XTG & ATG. Will that still be the way to use this type razor, or is it a single pass and done?

You can still do that many passes with the Feather, but you may not need to.

The Feather straight is so sharp that no pressure at all is needed. In fact too much pressure is going to lead to irritation and some bad razor burn.

Just start out going slow and very easy. Start with the sideburn area and work onto the cheeks. Once you get these easy area's down then move on to other areas. There's some good posts in the straight razor forum here at B&B, check them out, and take a look at any video's on shaving with a straight, both here and at straightrazorplace.com

I've been using an RG and DX folding handle pretty regularly for a while now. I still do a three pass shave, the same as if I were using a regular straight. Do I really need all three passes? Probably not. I could probably get a DFS with two. If I didn't have such a heavy beard, I might even be able to get away with one. These things are really sharp and work well.

I ordered an RG because I am a little unsure using a straight type razor. Do you find that the DX is much better?

other than one believe brass and one being stainless, probably not much of a difference. It will come down to weight. I haven't had an RG, but the DX has some heft to it. If you are trying one out, the RG is probably going to be fine. If you think you need a DX, I am sure you can sell the RG in the BST and recover some funds. Looks like Cheech has both, perhaps he can better comment.

I tried the Feather AC RG, it wasn't for me. I was able to sell it on B/S/T for a fair price. I can attest to their resale value :biggrin1:

Many people swear by them... and this is a great community to get assistance if you need it.

I wrote a thread on my experience with the AC:

Post #31 is where I compare the RG to the DX. (I also talk about blades and such in the thread)

Anyway, the DX is nice, but doesn't a performance edge to justify the price on your first go out. I have a DX, love my DX, and plan on keeping my DX. But, the RG is significantly lower priced, and doesn't perform all that different. I say start with the RG. If you like it, then you can sell your RG and look at the DX.

I just saw that there is a DX on the B/S/T for $135 (not much more than a RG). I'd snatch this up if I didn't already have one.

Really?? I thought they were good value, it's just the difficulty of obtaining blades in the UK, but seeing as I have had my blade in mine for over 20 shaves now, thats not too worrying :D

The DX and RG take the same blades, and are essentially the same. There's a little difference between the two. But the DX is twice the price of an RG. If you're talking a lifetime investment, I'd say go with the DX. But if you don't know how you'll like the Feather AC (because it really is its own thing), I'd say start with the RG. You can always sell it on the B/S/T. Those things almost fly out of here!

I'm not quite getting 20 shaves from my blades, but it will vary from user to user, and skill level to skill level. When I first started using the AC, I wasn't getting too many shaves off a blade. As my technique improved, so did the longevity of the blade.

I guess my question boils down to this: with a 39c (Slant) I can easily get BBS with 3 passes and a little touch up. Having no experience with anything resembling a straight, once I practice with the Feather (I've already begun banking my own blood for transfusions:w00t:) will I still be getting BBS quality shaves?

I paid £19.99 for my SS AFC, a good deal I thought, just seen the prices on the US sites and they are a lot more..... but they are still very good it seems for the investment cost of a comparable proper Straight.

I find the deftness of touch in the key I think, I am as gentle as possible and do maybe 3 passes and they seem to last, but I do dismantle dry and oil the parts every time I use it, which may make a bit of difference.

You will probably get away with less. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide ... try one pass to begin with, and see where that gets you ... 'perfect' 'needs some touch-up' or 'do another pass'.

Also, the straight-like shape dictates a more straight-like shave pattern, rather than the DE-ish WTG, XTG, ATG.
Might be off topic but does anyone do custom scales for the ACs?

I've never seen custom scales on an AC that I can recall, but see no reason why it can't be done. Round up the regular suspects ...

Ultimately, that depends on technique and your particulars.

I hate to make generalizations; but, I know several people who consistently get BBS from the Feather. Several straight users have an AC in their rotation. Its a good setup. I can't say it will definitely, consistently provide BBS. I can say that is most likely it will.

i just got one and it left me a nice cut on my cheek to let me know who´s the boss, im probobly going to wait a while before i give it another try,

It can be challenging, but once you get the hang of it, you will be its master.

You know what they say: "In soviet Russia, razor shaves you!"

Seriously, the learning curve is steep. Stick with it, and after a while, you'll forget how you got that cut.
